ParticipantHi Guys, happy New Year to you all, trust all is going well. I have a problem which your advice would be welcome. I came home on New years eve to find my Liebherr 1423 freezer which is just over 3 years old had defrosted itself. Liebherr use an agent in Brighton (Kensington Refrigeration) who having failed to turn up on friday as booked they came this morning and took the freezer away to their workshop. The guy said it was the compressor and would be an expensive repair. When I pointed out the age and the cost of the freezer I was told this was a common problem for all new freezers of all makes. It was because the new gas they have to use means the compressors have to work harder and are failing. I have to call on Wednesday to get the quote and they did say they would speak to the Liebherr rep to see if they would help on the cost. Is this correct what they are saying, should I go ahead with a repair (you can buy a new one on line for about £279). If I do change should I consider another brand. Since this is the same as the Miele freezer I thought I was getting something quiet and reliable. Any views or advice much appreciated. Rob 😡

It must be said that compressors do not seem as reliable as they used to be (what is?) and yes the alternative refrigerant, along with the alternative oil in the compressor, may be in part to blame. But it is by no means ‘normal’ that a comp should fail at 3 years and, if you have to pay the full cost for this it will not be far short of that new price you quoted.
This brand is generally pretty good and regardless, most compressors are bought in items so you may get the same one on another make anyway. I would kick up a fuss with Liebherr and try and get some sort of concession towards the repair from them.
I trust also that the location of the freezer is as per the instructions regarding ventilation etc which is another factor that can shorten compressor life.January 12, 2005 at 10:30 am #123010robmac

Thanks guys, freezer in well venterlated utility room. They are calling me today so I am prepared to kick up a fuss. Has I write they have just phoned, Kensington have gone ahead with the repair and fitted a new compressor with 12 months warranty to total cost is £150 inc vat. I suppose that is not too bad. They have suggested that since they are just a service agent that I should take it up with Liebherr. Do you think I should? Rob

Just to update you all, Liebherr sent me a cheque for £50 as a token of good will. So all in all not a bad result. R

Whoaa !!
Getting one over on manufacturers is not what I meant at all Rob.
The manufacturers don’t want bad press any more than you want a faulty appliance, it costs them a fortune to put right 😉
Communication and dialogue is always the best policy in my experience, there are many more happy and satisfied Liebherr and Rowenta customers out there than unhappy one’s than we’ll never know about, purely because they don’t have a problem.
I hope you get my drift 😀
Dave.

I do Dave, and please dont get me wrong, I certainly did not seek to and do not feel I did get the better of Liebherr. I feel their products are good, machines do go wrong and I felt I was delt with very well both by them and their service agents here in Brighton. Please note readers I am happy to recomend Liebherr. However Rowenta is a different story that I will not go into, but it involves lies, changing stories and a product that they can not get to work. However I have been nice to them all the way through, but I have to say it is all stating to wear a little thing. Take care. Rob
