We’ve got a fridge/freezer, which has been great for the last four years. However, over the last fortnight the freezer has been getting warmer, and now can only manage -12.

We found a lot of built up ice in the freezer, so we defrosted it for a day, but it didn’t fix the problem. Which is when I pulled it away from the wall…

We have a black gunk which appears to have leaked from one of the copper pipes leading to/from the compressor motor. It’s like tar.

I presume my problem is a leak of coolant, and therefore I need to call in an engineer (unfortunately no local enginer in repairs@ for our postcode of OX15 0NX 🙁 )

Just before I call Liebherr, has anybody got any advice that will help?

hello raymong, the black gunk has nothing at all to do with your problem.

is the fan in the freezer running?

if so and you’ve defrosted it for a day, it’s probably the evaporator drain hole that’s become blocked, not allowing the water that is the product of the defrost cycle to get away. this then becomes a big solid block of ice that would take more than a day to defrost on it’s own.

this block of ice cloggs up the airflow, making the freezer section a lot warmer.

to alleviate the problem temporarily, defrost for a longer period. however, it does sound like you need an engineer, as the problem could possibly lie in a few other areas.

    cheers.

    Thanks.

Your advice has made me go and investigate further. I removed the interior panel at tha back, and I found the channel at the back of the freezer stacked full of ice. Which made me wonder a bit more – and I found out that we hadn’t actually switched off the freezer when we defrosted it (aaagh 🙄 ) but instead had left it on – which meant that the front was defrosting while the back was collecting more ice than Shackleton’s moustache.

Now I feel an idiot – however, by sharing this feeling, perhaps somebody else might avoid my feeling!

Still wondering about the black gunk thought – perhaps I can use it instead of an oil change in the car…… (Hmm, now where’s that website for car servicing advice?)

it’s possible then that your drain hole was blocked up, causing the ice build up.

the black gunk is nothing to worry about.
it’s just an anti vibration material put on the external pipework of the appliance.
