ParticipantI’ve got to buy a new fridge freezer and the name Liebherr keeps popping up in the forums. Less than a handful of guys here in the trade forums keep recommending them but I’m not convinced. There are far too many owners of Liebherr to my liking posting many and varied issues with them. What could possibly be better about Liebherr that makes them so special or is it just a crafty ploy to get the public to buy a brand that keeps breaking down?

Virtually all refrigeration guys will tell you that Liebherr are better but, as you’re clearly skeptical about trusting multiple voices independent of one another, go buy a Beko then. Or a Bosch. Or whatever.
As for your “crafty ploy” conspiracy theory… I’m afraid that, as conspiracy theories go it’s a really bad one, stick with who really shot Kennedy, Apollo never made it to the moon, 9/11 coverups and so on as there’s likely far more credible evidence for that lot than your thoughts on that front. 😉

Liebherr are the Miele of the refrigeration world, in fact Liebherr manufacture Miele’s refrigeration products as well. Just like Miele, their products are top quality, expensive to buy and costly to repair!
We’ve had a high end Miele fridge freezer for 8 years (from Liebherr’s Austrian factory) and it has been absolutely superb. The only problems we’ve had are a block of ice in the bottom of the freezer caused by the kids leaving the door ajar in the summer after getting ice cream, which required a defrost 2 years ago, and a worn out fridge door handle mechanism, again due to abuse by the three kids.

As with most repairers I only see the broken fridges.
To get a true view only the manufacturers know.
You have to look at the Percentage of repairs to the amount of the products sold.
If you get a sensor go on a LIEBHERR you can replace it.
If you get a sensor go on a Beko it is foamed in.
Most makes of fridge freezers if treated ok are reliable, I see a lot of Samsung American fridge freezers most are never clean inside the fridge or freezer so never looked after.
They have common faults but I wonder some times if the percentage is any worse than other makes due to the high volume of Samsungs sold.
Now a days nothing last like it used to as all have built in obsolescence.
The days of fridges lasting 20years or more are long gone as manufactures would not be able to survive.
If I had to buy a fridge freezer, I would go for a fridge freezer you have to defrost and not a frost free. The more basic a fridge freezer is, if you regularly defrost it the less problems you get.I would avoid Chinese made fridges, But even Bosch Siemans now use Korean Daewoo to make there American style Fridge Freezers because of cost, but the Daewoo are more reliable than most.

Thanks for that stratfordgirl. The guy at John Lewis said that their Miele fridge freezers were made by Liebherr and that they stock just Miele. I guess that the compressors are Liebherr and not the usual Italian Necchi sort?
Ken, do lighten up.

The compressors on mine are ACC – don’t know if that’s good or bad – but they still run incredibly quietly. At over £1300 in 2007 I’ll be disappointed if it doesn’t last 20 years!

If you can even get a Liebherr at the moment, I have many thousands of pounds worth of orders waiting since xmas, still no delivery date.
