KeymasterWe have a Liebherr KTES 1744 refrigerator bought in December 2001. During the heatwave last summer, it simply could not cope and the temperature sensor inside went off the scale, i.e. over 9 degC. Owing to a rather ‘compact’ kitchen, we are somewhat limited in where we can position it – it’s pretty much in the window which is not ideal!
We phoned Liebherr last summer and managed to get them to send a replacement thermostat which I fitted without too much difficulty. It didn’t do the job though. In typical DIY style I buried my head in the sand over winter when the firdge was fine. Admittedly it’s set to the coolest setting and still only manages 3-4degC.
The first sign of serious sun this year and it’s already reading 6 degC. I have consulted the instructions and it appears that the climate rating for this fridge is only 10-32 degC – is this the problem? I am loathe to call out an ‘engineer’ at £70, especially if I am better off putting the money towards a new one if this is terminal or the fridge is simply unsuitable for our kitchen.
The only other thing I am aware it may be is the compressor.
Can anyone help?

If this fridge is built in under a worktop it may well be suffering from poor ventilation. The instruction book should give guidance re’ ventilation.
We have seen hundreds with this problem, you can do a “quick test” by removing it from the housing and leave it running overnight, then check the temperature in the morning.
If the temperature then is correct, it points to poor ventilation; if the temperature is still too high it would appear to be a system fault.

Have a look at the inside at the rear of the fridge and check that you do have a small coating of ice,if not gently press against the white panel assembly,if this has a sort of sponge effect it may be that the rear liner has come away from the evaperator plate which the thermostat is next to and this can cause the problem that you have.

Thanks guys – I shall try both suggestions. The fridge sits on a worksurface with a cupboard above it, so it is pretty boxed in admittedly. It is also right next to a large window which sees the sun from midday onwards, albeit behind a blind. It may seem like a stupid question, but how can I improve ventilation? Can you buy (quiet!) fans for this sort of thing?
I don’t know how standard these things are, but the thermostat which I replaced (needlessly it would seem) sits on the right side of the fridge where the light is and there was a 80cm(?) maleable thermocouple which pushed into the casing and presumably goes around the back of the unit. I will check out the sponginess of the backplate!

If the back wall is spongey it normally means the refrigerant pipework inside the insulation has punctured and the gas pressure has pushed the back wall away from evaporator, if so throw it away, not a repairable fault

Hello!
From what I’ve read this points to the condenser of your fridge not being able to function correctly. The condenser dissipates heat from the refrigerant gas, the heat being generated by the compression of the gas from the compressor.
The ambient temperature of the room will be seriously affected by sunlight through a window – the glass actually will amplify the temperature of the sun’s light passing through it. Most fridges in the UK have a maximum ambient working temperature of around 70 degrees and if your kitchen exceeds this the efficiency of the condenser to cool the compressed refrigerant will be impaired. For the refrigerant to work it must arrive at the evaporator at, not only the right temperature, but the right pressure (Boyles Law). Therefore the position of your fridge is probably the cause of its inefficiency.
As an earlier poster suggested, move it to a cooler location and see if it responds. However some refrigerant gases (R134a) do not like excess ambient temperature and contaminate the refrigerant gas with excess oil vapour and it may already be too late.

I have the sameproblem on a Liebherr 2840. It does, however, have a supercool switch which brings the temperature down implying that it is the thermostat

Hi Baimos.
Try looking at the main Liebherr website here:
http://www.liebherr.com/lh/en/default_lh.asp
There should be contact details there for you.
Regards.
Dave.
