ParticipantHi all,
I’ve been pulling my hair out for months on this one. Including an engineer visit and a new temperature sensor.
Fridge = Liebher SKes 4200. Compressor = Embraco EMY32CLC.
The compressor seems to fail to start sometimes drawing about 1000W and then “clicking” as if a cutout is coming in.
If I switch off before it cuts out then after a few attempts the initial current draw will be around 200W and after firing up the compressor runs normally (and happily) at about 60W until desired temperature is reached.
What on earth is going on?

Probably the compressor is stalling, essentially it’s partly seized by the sounds of it or seizing up and freeing off as it gets going, when it gets going.
Possibly worth trying a new relay first as it’s possible that’s an issue but, I’d be more inclined to lean toward compressor failure given the description of the problem.

Thanks kwatt – still pulling my hair out on this one!! Can buy a new stand alone fridge freezer (side by side) as the kitchen has been build around this unit – aghh. Liebherr really unhelpful and no luck in calling engineers either. I stipped the unit down today and checked the three poles on the side of the compressor (as embracco told me – ohms common to start + ohms common to run = ohms common to run). Plus I tested the three terminal for short against the compressor chassis. All good.
However the relay does look a little burnt out – but that could be just how overused it is. Not sure that the motor should be drawing 500W for more than a few moments.
Where can I buy a replacement relay??

What’s the service number on it please and I should be able to track down the exact one used?
Instructions on finding that are here:

Wow!
The relay is…. £49.95
The overload is… £49.95
That is insanely expensive but, it’s what comes up on Liebherr tech for it.
The compressor, you don’t even wanna know!

Wow! indeed 😉
Given that it’s a standard Embraco EMY32CLC compressor (retail about £60 complete) wouldn’t it be possible to but another unit with relay and overload that would work just as well (or better?)

In theory, yes.
Although I can’t find one trade at that price offhand and, I can’t locate a part number for the relay/overload either. Bryan or Eddie might know if they pick up on this thread.

Hello, just seen this. As Ken rightly says, your problem is likely to be the compressor. 90 odd percent of the time, a clicking starting device is a direct indication of the condition of the compressor.
Check your pms.Cheers.

Compressor on Liebherr parts is an EMY(S)32CLC New generation part number 6119238.
Relay and overlaod for original compressor are overload 6941014 and relay 6940650
