lock snapped off on washing machine door

hi,i ve just taken washing out of my washer/dryer and noticed that when i shut the door it did nt feel right,i tried to put some clothes in to dry but it would nt start.
i think the tip of the lock on the door has snapped off but i could nt find it anywhere…i ve just been reading the how to fix your lock thing and how you can get to it etc but i dont know if this applies to my problem,i think the bit thats snapped off must have fallen in to the little square hole,is this what that self help be was about or not ???,could anyone explain,thanx…cathie
