ParticipantWoke up this morning to the devastating news regarding the London tower block fire, amazing how ANY fire can spread to destroy an entire building.
However, couple of eye witness reports stating caused by a fridge freezer.

Quite scary to consider a recently refurbished building, and the fire alarm wasn’t working either.

a lot of question to answer on the safety of high rise buildings. something has allowed the fire to escape out of the original source on the fourth floor. why no sprinklers? talk of outside cladding burning

Agreed, Dave. There’s been issues in the past with supposed “upgrades” causing a fire safety nightmare, brings back memories to the 747 which burnt due to the in flight entertainment system which was fitted.
The cladding, surely, should be tested for flammability?

I actually lived in that block in 1980 for about 9 months when I first got married,
The flat next door was set alight by someone and the person inside was killed, but it didn’t affect our flat at all.
What has changed in the block since then ?
Quite shocking really as I new that area very wellJune 14, 2017 at 9:17 am #448152RocketMan

A couple of things spring to mind:
1. In flats like these there should be a system of control on major electrical appliances. It’s easier because these aren’t private flats they’re LA flats. So many recalled appliances still being used. A serious hazard but especially in high rised flats.
2. Cladding on the outside of tall buildings. In the passed couple of years, a few serious fires in the Persian Gulf/Gulf of Oman sates have had serious fires caused or aggravated by plastic cladding. External esthetic cladding is a modern innovation. I doubt it’s controlled by current fire regs. Hopefully, some one can clarify.
My thoughts to all concerned

If it is a fridge fire, its going to massively effect the manufacturer, I imagine the MD’s at BEKO has got a few sleepless nights ahead until forensics prove the cause.
Imagine the punters in Currys, “BEKO, aren’t they the ones who caused that massive tower block to burn down, think ill get a Bush or a Curry’s Essential instead?”

Absolutely horrific tragedy. Apparently the block was completely renovated 2 years ago, new heating system and no doubt electrics and plumbing installed. Aside from the suspect cladding, I wonder whether corners were cut in resealing firewalls between compartments after the new services were installed.

The Grenfell disaster and reference to a F/F possible catalyst spurred me to enquire what make my daughter has in her flat. Turns out it is part of the 2000/2006 recall (she never registered the purchase :rolls: ) Beko safety recall phoneline very responsive and engineer calling on the 20th to carry out the mod…Meanwhile she’s using one of my F/F’s, just to be safe. 😀

Expect to see/read/hear lots of this:

Which reminds me. Two blocks of flats I look after. A New agency took over in February and in March I reminded them they had at least 1/2 doz Hotpoint dryers that needed modifying and were not to be used. I sent them all the details. Read receipt but no reply. I like to sleep at night, I think I’ll remind them again !!

Just seen that. Beko execs can sleep a little better now. But, that opens up a whole new can of worms.
