Public awareness toward issues of safety of domestic appliances around the home has to be a paramount concern. The tragedy of Grenfell a platform for all those that can remedy a solution toward avoiding a reoccurrence through public awareness. Whirlpool’s response to this specific event to my mind is acceptable to a point but far from convincing based on their current tumble dryer safety issues. Though I was delighted to learn that their range of fridges are all fitted with flame retardant metal backs, a proven safety feature.

Whilst the enquiry seems to suggest the fridge was the source of the fire outbreak, and the LFB responded to the original 999 call and extinguished the fridge fire, how the fire developed from there is so far not concluded. Meanwhile we in the trade should be ever mindful to check and double check our crimped connections

Yes Martin I agree about awareness completely but, not unfounded outright fear or scaremongering.

And, there are differing opinions on a cause, even from fire experts.

I’d hazard that 99{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}+ of any safety issues with appliances could be negated if people just read and followed the instructions. Thing is, we all know they do not do so then when it all goes titsup.com it’s everyone or anyone’s fault but theirs.

Vert de gris and loss of insulation on copper wiring is a possible indicator of a bad connection, but water leaks or condensation could also be an explanation. But surely if the appliance has been through flames and doused with a fire hose, how can you tell if this is the cause of the result of the fire?

Even if this was down to a bad connection, to suggest the good old Tyco/Amp spade connector is somehow indicative of a design weakness, is not helpful. These are surely the most tried and tested, reliable and safest connectors around, capable of carrying much higher loadings than encountered on a fridge.

“He said the corporation claimed the fire may not have started electrically but “by someone throwing something – perhaps a burning cigarette – into the kitchen through the open window”

sounds plausible people walk past 4th floor windows all the time
