looks ok. I assume its a gas pipe.
the black marks are where the wood has burnt when the plumber soldered it with a blow lamp

Okay, so you don’t think it’s from poor installation or anything? Just from the soldering?

can say about the rest of the installation but as long as there are no gas leaks it ok

That is an appalling gas pipe union. The solder weld looks less than total. Clearly the bodger installer was fearing his blowtorch would completely incinerate the cupboard unit so heated as much as he dare and loaded the solder into a messy splodge.
If you were to email that photo to the Gas Safe website they would insist you get it tested AND probably question who the hell did it? :eeek:

Do you think we should do that? I am still a bit concerned with it but we have been here for 2 years now and I guess we’ve never looked that far under the cupboard to notice it until now.

if you want to be sure find a local gas safe plumber and ask his advice. The problem with a picture is we can only see one side and as Martin said it does not look like he got the joint quite hot enough to be totally certain its ok. He has a compromise that and setting alight to the cupboard. Don’t know why he has done it this way and as far as I know there are electric irons you can get to use in these sort of places
bear 1 thing in mind you cant be too careful about gas

If you have your boiler serviced annually a gas safe engineer will only carry out a visual check of the appliances unless you can smell gas from the area the fitting is there is no issue only it’s not a very good job.
