KeymasterHi guys…
Im looking to buy a Condenser type dryer which will be placed in my garage but I have a couple of concerns / questions… any advice appreciated please:
(1) As the dryer is going to be in a non-heated garage, is everything likely to get covered in condensation when its cold outside?
(2) Referring to the above question, I am led to believe that condenser dryers are worse for this than vented ones – is this the case?
(3) What machine would you recommend for around £300? I have been looking at the Hotpoint CTD80P today but have just found a website (Quality Electrical Direct) that sells the Bosch WTL6307 for just over £300… am I on the right lines??
(4) Silly question maybe but I last had a tumble dryer years ago that regularly shrunk clothes and generally damaged them.. Im assuming they have got a lot better since then…. Is this the case or am I still going to see problems?
(5) regarding the efficiency of condenser dryers – how much longer do they take to run a cycle in comparision to a vented dryer?? Is there any other disadvantages??
Any other advice appreciated please!! 😉
Cheers
Steve

CTD80 is a good machine, I have one myself. Nothing has gone wrong with it yet, touch wood. Around the £300 mark is about right.

Whilst the Hotpoint mentioned is a good value and a fairly reliable machine, its use in the environment you intend is not a good idea 🙁 They are vulnerable to damp and tumble dryers generate a lot of that, so a very risky product. Far better the Bosch in my opinion as it has no known susceptibilty toward that situation 😉

The easiest way to avoid the condensation isssue is to buy a vented dryer and put the hose through the wall. Vented driers are genearlly more energy efficient, as well as being a damn sight simpler!

Merritt,
Condenser dryers are not as energy efficient as vented dryers owing to the complexities of their operation, but come close nevertheless. But as it is being installed in a garage perhaps you would rather consider buying a vented machine and knocking a hole in the outside wall and installing a vent kit?
Also, lay linoleum or similar waterproof floor covering onto the bare concrete floor to prevent rising damp should the floor not have an adequate DPM 💡

Excellent, thanks…
Since I have only been looking at condenser dryers, do you have any recommendations for good quality, reliable vented dryers that work well is this sort of environment please?
Cheers

Considering the invironment its going in, there’s a good case to buy a basic machine like a White Knight or a Creda for example…they are very cheap to buy, very basic and therefore reliable, and they will dry your clothes quite adeqautely.
As to which model well its worth buying a model which has a reversing action to avoid a lot of creasing.
The only important thing to consider when installing it is to make sure the vent hose is as short as possible, preferable less than three feet (1 metre). Any longer than that and the moisture in the exhaust may condense within the vent hose causing problems.
All in all the cheapest and easiest way to go really 😉Clive
