ParticipantI have put new drum bearings in a Hotpoint WD62 washer dryer but there’s still lots of play in the drum which I can now see is due to the alloy bearing housing insert being loose in the plastic drum moulding. Is there any way to repair this? I’m wondering about drilling a series of holes round the periphery of the insert and injecting epoxy resin. It’s frustrating having to scrap the machine after spending time on it. Before I discovered this problem I did quite a lot of cleaning, as there was a lot of rusty greasy gunge round all the inside surfaces of the drum, spider and tub. 🙁

I seriously doubt any success will come of it unfortunately. 🙁 The ally collar is in effect heat welded to the polypropylene in manufacturer so the majority of that collar, as a rule, elongates the area where it sits. And also the black aluminium deposits don’t allow resin bonding much adhesion that wont give way after half a dozen washes anyway. 😥

It is quite common to see this, mainly on the washer dryers but also on the higher spin speed washing machines.
As Martin says, no effective repair. 😉
If the marks down the back of the drum are a rusty red then crack on, if they are a grey and sludgy, run a mile.

The marks in this case were rusty and the front bearing had collapsed. At least scrapping this one will give me a donor heater I need for another machine I’m building for myself.

Once I had the bearing housing fracture when I was hammering out the front bearing. The front 2cm or so of the housing came away as a ring. I araldited it back in place and it lasted very well. Your situation there is of course more difficult. I would have been tempted to give it a go by drilling holes around the periphery from the back and inserting bolts or long self tappers. But not if water had been coming through that way.

I have told the customer it’s BER. Apparently I changed the tub once before on this same machine but I can’t remember why.
