Machine overfilling after hot wash

Hi There

I have a AEG/Electrolux Lavamat – Model L52810.

12 years old.

Last year I replaced the main bearings with your help. Everything has been fine. Yesterday we used a 95 degree wash for the first time. Now the machine starts the fill, stops and then continues to fill, stops again and then fills again. It then it stops altogether. No drum movement at all. By this time the drum is half full, way over its usual level.

Is this the solenoid valve(s)? But why after a very hot wash or is this a coincidence? Any advice much appreciated.

What is the product number please as there are several versions, begins with 91?????? sometimes ending with a /??
As a rough guess what you want to do first is to try the machine on a normal 40 degree wash to check the level so you can discount that the cause is to do with 90 degree programme before doing anything more. Usually overfilling should occur whatever fill programme you set the machine on and if so as is likely the air trap will most likely be blocked or rather part blocked. find the pressure switch and trace down its thin hose to under the machine and that is the air trap. Also check that thin hose too for pin prick hole where it might have rubbed on the tank – common. You might want to check the motor brushes have not worn out too, at 12 years old that would not be surprising one jot.

A few more details. After the drum ‘overfills’ , which it does on 40 degrees by the way, the drum stops, but one can then put it on a rinse cycle or pump out and it works fine, so I don’t think the motor is the problem, for the moment. We’ve done this of course with or without clothes. The product no is: 91452401501. I will inspect pressure switch hose.

Okay, so the thin hose is fine for twelve years old. Also it doesn’t seem blocked. Passed a thin wire down it and gently moved up and down. The clips top and bottom are good.

Is it possible the pressure switch itself is malfunctioning? As mentioned the machine is overfilling on ALL programs.

did you check the thin hose all the way down for abrasions. Had a few of them rub through over the years and if the air leaks out the machine will over fill

Okay so I’ve taken the hose off now. There are minor scuffs but no holes. There is a bracket on the drum that holds the hose to stop any scuffing. I have passed a thin wire down the hose and blown down it, no probs. Replaced it and the machine still overfills and would probably continue unless I stopped it.

I presume the air trap should fill with water? Especially when the level is really high.

What’s the likelihood of the pressure switch not working after 12 years?

you can get a hole in the rubber diaphragm of the switch

anything that may leak air will cause this problem

the air trap does not fill all the way up, at most about half way. if it does you have an air leak

I can’t see any water in the air trap on any program! It is about a third of the way up the door and there’s nothing.

i assume its not blocked at the bottom as you will get a small amount of water but it never fills up

Right I’ve stripped out the air trap and it’s clear. I filled the drum with 5ltr manually to check for leaks, but the air trap is showing no water in it. Can’t understand this. Does this mean there is a pressure in the line? Don’t get it.

its a pressure switch so yes there is pressure in the line but its very low

now we know its all clear your down to 2 possible fault

pressure sw
control board
faulty connection ( but you can check that by removing and replacing contacts both on the switch and the board )

Right Dave but if I have a leak in the line i.e. pressure switch maybe, then the trap should fill up, shouldn’t it? As I say don’t get it – the water is not finding its own level.

pressure switches can fail electrically as well as the diaphram so wont leak but still wont work

Okay. As a test (should have done it earlier) I released the pipe from the pressure switch and immediately water rose in the air trap. So this means i have no air leaks? So if the switch is bad then it’s an electrical problem, yes? Or it’s not the switch at all.

sounds like you down to faulty sw or board

assume you checked the wiring connections
