I’ve been seeing quite a few machines having sone sort of calc connector at the end of inlet hose, some have this ball that sits in the dishwasher or rolls about inside the washing machine.

I’m a bit suspicious if this works or not as I examined the heater off a three years old zanussi washer with calc block attached to it since new. The heater is covered in limescale.

Are there any truths behind this calc block and magno ball?.

You’re presumably talking about some kind of accessory rather than part of the equipment itself?

Yes. People seem to buy them thinking it would eliminate limescale. My point was that I was asked to check the washing machine’s heater after three years of using calc block to see if it’s free from limescale.

In this case it did not seem to do the job. Where are the evidence to back up the claim that it would eliminate limescale if you use calc block or magno ball?

Think currys are flogging these things..it’s an inline metal piece that fits between the inlet hose and inlet valve..supposed to have a magnet inside that attracts “something “!

Do a eBay search for Wpro water conditioner.

Do they work or is it a con?

These things you mean….most likely the answer is no! But the good news is that it’s likely to bring on more work when they go wrong, so that’s turning a negative into a positive ( if you’ll pardon the magnetic pun :clown: )

“Magnetic water treatment” in Wikipedia gives useful overview. It seems there may be some effect on limescale deposits, but not well understood scientifically.

Not according to the wiki link you gave it doesn’t………

Wikipedia wrote:no solutes (such as calcium or magnesium) are removed from the water by the process.”

So, in effect, for washing machines and dishwasher, and as Twixi observed with their crudded up heaters, they are…bl**dy useless! 😀

    Re: Magno calc thingy

On the contrary, Martin, the article cites several scientific studies showing it reduces the effective hardness of the water by changing the way the limescale crystallises and deposits on surfaces and by keeping it in suspension.

So these devices don’t eradicate limescale, but can reduce the impact of it. So, for example, limescale forming on taps can be more easily wiped away. Whether they will protect heating elements from damage is a moot point.

But be assured, I wouldn’t buy one myself. I am sure they are far less effective than good old fashioned Calgon (or other brands of laundry descaler available).

And just as many studies that will demonstrate that they are as Martin alludes, useless.

TBH there’s no point and, by the time you find out if they work or not, it’s too late. Regardless of the outcome.

Personally I can’t but help think, snake oil.

Ah yes, I forgot to add a comment earlier about these amazing gizmo’s. It’s just that I was distracted by the wonder of these ‘magnodoodahs’ I suppose. Yes indeed, the amazing Eco Balls. They are an incredible washing wonder that no self-respecting tree hunger would be without. You can stick your balls in the tub time and time, over and over again with amazing results. So environmentally good for the planet too AND the polar bears!

    They don’t work either.

    Or soapnuts.
