Planning on setting up on my own after working in partnership for a well established company. (no comments as to why). I’m thinking about aproaching a few of the manufactures I’m familure with but not sure if they would require me to be VAT registered for account reasons. I know different companys will have different ways of business but just trying to get some ideas togeather. I don’t want to become VAT registered or at least not so soon.
    Any help please?
    Thank you,
    Rob.

i wouldn’t have thought that manufacturers would, or indeed could, insist that you were vat registered.
the problem for you, if doing contract work, would occur when you were charged for a part (including the vat) and couldn’t charge the vat back to the company, effectively losing the vat content of the part.

    Alf is correct Rob.

Most will look for VAT registered companies as it’s easier to deal with from a commercial standpoint, especially on recharges as noted. Dealing with non-VAT companies imply increases the admin time required.

The problem these day is that the VAT office will often not allow you to register for VAT unless you can either prove that you turnover enough, have good cause to b registered or that you will exceed the threshold in the year that you apply. I think it has something to do with the VAT scams that have been going on of late.
