on the subject of martindale, it does anoy me when wp’s ask for “martindale readings” on job sheets. Its just a trade name and they produce a whole heap of test equipment with the same name. Yes, I know what it is and most here do but does everyone understand that?

Megger and Martindale is very much ‘standard speak’ in the trade. The alternative would involve a long winded request for ‘voltage, polarity and earthing checks’ which, for the average Joe Bodger, could be confusing.

While a “Megger test” is well understood to mean an insulation resistance test, “Martindale test” is as eastlmark says ambiguous, and I suspect could betray a lack of understanding on the part of the wp of the tests they require. A quick Google search reveals that a Martindale test is in fact a measure of the durability of upholstery fabric.

That’s Dale Boys test with a martindale he fabricated that one ask Martin.
He used the test to cover himself.

Darn! I wish I could share the joke but Googling ‘Dale Boys’ drew a blank. (Some obscure Lancastrian football team maybe?)

Being serious for a moment I wonder what a “Martindale test” involves and which “WP’s” insist on it?
Even that Whirlpool tumble dryer recall video concentrated purely on safety testing of the appliance only and with no reference toward the actual house mains supply. Add to that a very recent thread on the subject of wall sockets and those of us that shy away from going near them all makes for great entertaining reading.
….and where has lee8 gone? He would love all this. 😉

To megger an appliance is as common to us in the trade as hoovering is to the general public but doing a martindale is completely new one on me
My pat tester checks sockets etc as a pre test to the appliance test itself. Is this what a martindale test is.January 31, 2016 at 10:50 pm #434882SAMURI

A Martindale plug in tester is just like a three pin plug with three lights on the front to show if the socket is wired correct.
It shows if you have an earth fault or if the live and neutral are crossed or neutral or live are not connected.
Just a simple plug in tester that anyone can use without any training as it is marked on the plug what each light means.

Oh I’ve got one of those. Thought it may mean some other elaborate test for some reason
