ModeratorMaytag LSE7806 its the top loader washer that sits under a weird tumble drier.
Motor just buzzes instead of running, even with belts off, a quick flick gets it going. Capacitor reads ok (well it charges up and discharges a fat spark from the megger but as its 77uf I cannot just connect one up to try it) Had a look at the contacts on the top of the motor and seem ok. Centrifugal swtich is clicking over when motor started by hand. All windings look clean and shiny.
Can anyone explain the starting operation of these? The capacitor would appear top be only in circuit after the motor has started and the centrifugal switch operated which seems a bit odd.
ANy help appreciated.November 8, 2007 at 8:23 pm #233227spanner51

The capacitor is usually in series with the start winding and switches off when the centrifugal switch ( or start switch ) clicks off. If the motor buzzes in both directions (i.e wash and spin) it must be either a faulty capacitor or motor. if it buzzes in one direction then it’s usually a faulty timer.

Sounds like its the timer. Remove two screws on access cover below timer knob. Remove timer cap( thin blade screw driver) slip out clip remove two screws and timer will be loose. two screws at top of dryer removes the front plate. You can pull of grey plastic cover that wraps around the timer and you will possibly see black flash/burn marks around
the cam contacts its always the neutral side that blows. As a temp repair you may be able to file the burnt part of the contacts this should keep it working for a few washes Maytag part no 33001733 for timer.
hope this is of some use.November 8, 2007 at 11:10 pm #233229eastlmark

Yes you are right. I now have a wiring diagram but the contact in the block on the top of the motor is definalty open circuit when the motor is still, hence the cap is out of circuit. I cannot work out how it has got that way as the centrifugal switch definatly clicks when the motor is bump started. there must be somthing broken or missing within that contact block.
thanks to both of you for your input. If you can shed any light on that contact block and how it should be please let me know.

When the motor is still the centrefugal switch button should be pressed in. When motor runs the switch is released. If the switch is faulty it is available as a spare part.

so on the one I have the button is released when the motor is still. It does give a loud click once the motor is runnign but the switch state doesnt alter. Does that mean a new motor then?

Have you checked the timer?

dont think that is the problem. Seems the cap is not in circuit when the motor is stopped. thanks anyway.

If the switch state doesnt alter after you hear the click, it must be the lever which operates the switch either stuck or broken. With the button out it is in run mode, so capacitor is out of circuit. It sounds as if a new motor is what you need. Hope this helps.

😳
thanks to sorted and spanner 51. It was the timer after all 😳
not that it was entirely my poor judgement as…..after fitting the new motor, which did not cure the fault, the customer noticed me having a nervous breakdown and finally admitted that her husband had removed the “relay” on top of the motor and ” a bit flew out” which they never managed to find and so just put it all back together and leaving the capacitor out of circuit as I explained above. Customer therefore happy to pay for motor and timer and job now done.
Thanks again chaps.

retail price not as expensive as you might think, given the cost of the appliance in the first place. Motor was £79.39. timer £69 odd.
