ParticipantCan someone clarify something for me with regard to members? 700 plus now according to our opening page, new today Minty. Find Minty in Public forum, very obviously a member of the Public. Surely Minty should be a guest rather than a member?
I only ask because I had envisaged the 700 being a developing trade network across the country; and THE GUESTS.
Do they make-up a significant proportion of the 700? If Minty is a member, is this a temporary status until problem is solved?
All confused after a long hard day,

KeymasterAnyone can register an account.
Not anyone gets access to the Trade Forums or the special forums.
Roughly, there are curently 250-300 trade members registered with each group having specific access rights, there are several groups encompassing DASA, UKW Subscribers, Whirlpool etc, etc.
Guests isa default setting for posters that have no account on UKW.

ParticipantRight, so that really factually cocks up the “Free Advice” post I put up earlier – which I did sit and consider for a fair time before putting it up.
Members and Associates and Guests? Might give us a fairer impression of where we really are. 700 engineers is pretty impressive. 300 is not! 700? Might be a Dyson engineer out there somewhere – 300 – less likely.
I had thought that out of 700, I’m a bit noisy, along with about 15 other regulars, with plenty to say. With only 300 it puts a slightly different complexion on the whole way the site is working. We have less strength in depth than I had thought, although I wouldn’t dream of faulting any individual for their imput.
Obviously, we must recruit – vigorously!
Been an interesting evening,

KeymasterActually, 300 members from the trade in under a year is pretty damn good if you ask me and, bear in mind, that many of those are principals of a business and not a mere individual as such. That would probably encompass the vast majority of the independent trade in terms of agents doing contract work having at least someone that is reading UKW.
Getting to employed engineers is a slightly different ball game I’m afraid. The only way is by word-of-mouth as Mr Merloni is hardly liable to tell his engineers to pop along and read this is he? 😉
So you’re left with only the engineers/agents that happen across the site whilst looking for something or those that are informed of it by another site user/member.
I looked at this before and so did Martin at one stage and trying to reach people is a nightmare!
What did come as a shock to me whilst doing some research is that in many areas on Yell and Scoot there are very few people listed, even when it’s free which leads to the conclusion that the numbers are dwindling anyway.

Martin rightly suggested that more of us, (I mean others) should join this subscriber forum.
I think we need to come up with a cunning plan to gain more interest. Perhaps it is an idea to put a bit of bait out to attract more interested parties. As I see it at the moment there isn’t a lot happening in the section and we really need to pull more members in.
I’m not complaining as I think it is worth my £5 per month to browse the whole lot, anything in here is a bonus, but it would be a good thing if we can attract a few more readers to this area.
Is it worth putting the next juicy bit of gossip or whatever in here for 24 hours before moving into an open domain? then when people see a tasty header in the scrolling headlines bottom right, they may be enticed to put a hand in their pockets.
Only a thought

KeymasterWait till Friday, I will hopefully have something interesting for in here and for the people here.
After that it may take on a different slant. 😉

Alex,
Just to let you know that the subject still is very much in mind, Ken and I have been working on this all the while. I am pleased to report that indeed more of our colleagues have joined since your posting and others (at this moment in time) are having their applications processed 🙂
The “cunning plan” in this case was simply to point out the advantages via ‘pm’ to each any every one 😉
