mercury rc 1090 compatible main oven temp control unit

Hi,
Was just wondering if the temp control unit on my old Mercury RC 1090 is a part that can be replaced with something that is not necessarily bespoke as the part is basically a variable resistor and handles the same current as most other cookers. For instance , what about swapping it out for a temp control unit on a current Mercury model albeit the company is now Rangemaster owned since the mounting method will be probably the same ( two screws that tap in to the front of the unit to retain it against the cooker front panel)? Basically are they all the same ?
