MFI APM6822 problems

Hi all

Glad I’ve just found this site, it looks really useful.

I have a 5 year old MFI integrated fridge freezer. I thought recently it was sounding a little louder than normal, and have since noted it isn’t switching itself off anymore; it just whirs and whirs all the time.

I have just defrosted it but it’s the same. The thermostat kicks in if I switch the unit off from the thermometer/thermostat just fine, but it never seems to turn itself off. I have the temp setting on 1 out of 9 at the mo, and would say things inside seem cooler than they should; I’ll check again this evening to be sure.

Could it just be a dodgy thermostat I wonder?

Does anyone know anything that could help, the constant noise is annoying and can’t be right as it never used to go on forever!

Nope, I’m afraid not, the thermostat only switches the motor on and off at the relevant tempertaures.

This is a system problem, compressor, low gas, blockage or insulation related.

A refrigeration engineer will be required to make a 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} diagnosis for you, check repairs@

Please be prepared for the worse though as any of those problems will either be expensive or terminal 🙁

Oh yeah, for the record it uses R600a, and the interior light comes on fine. There seems to be a light (less than 1mm) build-up of ice on the back wall of the fridge… I honestly can’t remember if this is normnal or not.

Hi Dave

Thanks for the quick reply. You seem quite sure it’s not the thermostat, is that because it is turning itself ON without a problem?

It seems I either pay £50 call out plus parts and VAT if it can be fixed (I’ll guess a part is £100 minimum) or just go buya new one! I think to only get 5 years out of my unit is a bit poor though!

The thermostat is basically a temperature sensitive on/off switch, all it does is switch the compressor on when it’s too warm and switches it off again when it gets cold enough. The fact that it’s running continuously rules it out as it never gets cold enough to make the thermostat react.

The compressor (if failed) will cost you circa £150 – £200 to have replaced, insualtion and blockages are non-repiarable on the whole and a shortage of gas would indicate a leak which if undetectable is also non-repairable.

My personal opinion would be to get it checked, and ensure the installation is in accordance with the manufacturers instructions paying particular attention to the venting requirements as this may be the cause of the failure. A replacement integrated fridge/freezer isn’t cheap and matching the door sizes can be a nightmare.

And here was I naively thinking any integrated fridge-freezer would fit! Hmmm, sounds like it’s time to do some homework…

Dave, it seems more than cold enough in the fridge-freezer even on setting 1, (I think colder than it normally is on that low setting), and so in theory the thermostat should switch off I would have thought… would you still rule the thermostat out? As you can tell, I would much prefer it to be the thermostat as it is easy to get to and can’t be too expensive!

As a last point, the fridge freezer door was left slightly ajar for a day very close to me noticing this problem… I guess this could have started the problem?

Yes, this could well have caused the problem, try a complete defrost and see how that goes.

Unfortunately I have well and truely defrosted it but it’s still chugging away relentlessly!

No chance of my thermostat being the culprit Dave?

I would say no, for the reasons I mentioned already but also you would normally expect the fridge to turn in to a virtual freezer and freeze some or all your food if it were running all the time.

Engineer time in all honesty I think
