ParticipantHi,
I have a Sharp microwave (microwave only) oven. The lcd display packed up within weeks of purchase and was replaced free of charge. It has packed-up again. Sharp have offered to pay for parts but I’ll have to pay for labour. I am wondering if it is worth it, since I am sure the next one will fail to, and next time I am sure I will have to pay for both parts and labour ;(
Now sometimes there is not enough room under our grill, so i thought about getting a microwave with grill. Then sometimes we could use it as a microwave and other times as a grill. Are the grills good enough to grill by or are they just for browning?
I see there are two types: microwaves that are with grill only have quartz grills but microwaves that can be used as ovens too have elements. Why the difference (presumably the quartz one will not withstand the high temperatures?) and does it make any difference in operation?
Does the grill cover all the area inside the oven or does the food rotate into and out of the grilling area?
How quick are microwave ovens to heat up when used as ovens, our proper oven is not fan assisted, so it takes ages.
Sorry for all the questions, I am trying to decide whether to go with microwave ony/grill/combination oven. Was thinking to avoid Sharp but possibly go with Panasonic. Any opinions on make?
Why are Sharp LCDs so fragile? I don’t remember my calculator breaking at that was thrown about in my school bag!
Thanks.December 10, 2004 at 11:44 pm #121306clivejameson

There are pro’s and con’s with everything stephen…microwave combi’s are quick to heat up (typically 150 degress C in 6-8 mins), economical to use and the quartz grills are all but instant…for grilling as well as browning. Against that, because most machines have a turntable and the door has to be shut for operation, you cannot grill on anything with a handle. This means handling a round dish (as supplied) with oven mitts so positioning of the machine is critical to make this easy.
My personal preference would be to have a micro/grill/oven combi…you can use it just as an oven, just as a micro or a combination of the two together which means very fast cooking with all the taste and texture of oven cooked food (baked spuds with crispy skins in under half an hour for example) and of course you can grill too.
As to makes, well Sharp and Panasonic are both good makes but as with most things…generally the more you pay the better you get! 😉
