Miele 3922WPS only hot on boil wash – Washing machine

I recently replaced the heater element on my washing machine. Went without a hitch once I managed to get the original one out.

While I was at it I replaced the temperature sensor and stripped and cleaned all the drain pipes from the drum to the hole on the back where it attaches to the external hose. was slow to drain before.

Put it all back together after checking for leaks around various bits. Ran a boil wash (Cottons 95c) to flush everything through. Ran perfectly.

Ive since noticed that the water only appears to be getting hot on the hottest washes (95c as above).
I remember the door was always at least warm to the touch on the standard 30-40c washes but now it seems cold all the time except for the boil wash.
The washing seems clean.

Aside from being slow to drain for a while (remedied now) and the element eventually going pop it’s been a work horse.

No error codes seen.

Can anyone shed any light on a possible cause.

FYi the element was a £20 generic off eBay.

I’ve since been told by the missus that is has also been hot on 60c minimum iron however it wasn’t hot on 60c cottons setting. Seems a little sporadic.

I expect the element is an works all the time or not at all type of deal – so if it’s getting hot some times then it shouldn’t be an element fault right?

Btw had this machine from new since 2008 and this is the first issue.

assume temp sensor was correct one from Miele

have you tried putting the old sensor back ?

Yes. The sensor was sold as for this model (among others). I’ve tried the old one back in and it’s still the same issue.

well its a simple system in some ways

sensor tell the board the temp of the water. the board decides when to turn heater on

so as far as i know if the heater is ok and the heater relay ( proved by the fact it works on higher temps) it must be the board and thats going to be expensive especially if you fit it and find out your wrong

is it single or double glazed door as its almost impossible to feel lower temps through a double glazed door

Apologies for the delay.
That’s disappointing to hear – was hoping to get many more years of use out of this.

In was sure it was only the element at fault initially. Aside from it draining slowly it worked perfectly until the element went – started tripping power as soon as it had filled at the beginning of the cycle. Now that no longer happens just sporadic heating.

The element was cheap – would you be almost certain that isn’t to blame here?

Oh and I’m pretty sure it’s just a single glazed door

its the fact it heats on very hot. if the element was faulty i would expect it not to heat

would be strange if a blown heater affected the board

where did you get the temp sensor from? was it a gen part

you could try putting the old one back and see if you get different symptoms

well the part number of the sensor is correct. it has been superceded but another number but still compatible

I would either

measure the resisance of both sensors at the same temperature or swop it back and see if anything changes
