I was going to ask for help choosing a new machine, but had registration problems with the forum.

Anyway, my 13 year old Bosch WVD24520GB, used by one person, has died. It first failed after 8 years and I replaced the drain pump, for about £15. Two years later the water heating failed. I replaced the thermostat and element, but it still didn’t work, so I guess a relay or something else had failed. Not long after the dryer blower failed, and a week or two ago the bearings announced their intention to depart this world. So I needed a replacement.

I really wanted to buy a Miele, as I hate throwing away a machine, and creating landfill waste. They say they are designed to last 20 years. And many components are much better than on Bosch et al. But Which surveys indicate that they are not more reliable than Bosch and others. And the online user reviews are atrocious! Even worse, they only have a two year warranty, compared to a five year warranty on many Bosch machines, So today a new Bosch WAN28259GB arrived. The warranty gives peace of mind for five years, and after that I can easily obtain Bosch parts at reasonable prices.

With a five year warranty I might have gone for Miele, but at £900 including installation, and the old machine recycled, and only a two year warranty, I’m not buying one. If they don’t have confidence in their own machines, I certainly don’t. A serious fault after two years could require an expensive repair. Am I wrong to distrust Miele?

I feel bad about throwing the old machine out, but I didn’t fancy doing a bearing replacement, and delving into the water heating issue.

Ten years ago I would have gone with Miele everytime. Now not so sure, they have certainly cut quite a few corners in their build and quality recently. The once regular five and ten year warranty promotions are now virtually non existent. The price of spares is still very high compared to others and service info can be a struggle to obtain.

I’d be happy with a new Bosch with a five year warranty 🙂
