KeymasterHi,
My fridge freezer is set at -18 the temperature had recently dropped to -7 (without adding anything, just a bit of opening and closing) upon putting two ice packs into the freezer the temperature rapidly dropped to 0!! and took 8 hours to get to -3. We have had problems before but not to this extent. It has previously sounded a warning showing “F4” in the display. It is not doing that now but intermittently the alarm will sound.
Any ideas?

hi
try turning the whole appliance off for 24hrs with the freezer door open and then close the doors and switch back on and it should be ok.
this model is made by Liebherr for Meile and they do have a habit of frosting up in the freezer compartment which will cause this fault.
hope this helps

Thanks for this.
Yes it seems that there is a build up of frost on the inside back wall.
Would it be this causing the problem? if so would you mind explaining why this happens.
Thanks again, this is truly a brilliant site.

hi
the normal cause for this is that the door hasnt fully closed at some point in the last few weeks or that the baskets has caused this.
common problem where kids are concerned.

Thanks for the advice.
But I dont think either of these reasons could be the case.
Could it be anything else?
How can I avoid this happening in the future?

Neermal – I have the very same model Miele F/F and the exact same thing is happening to mine. Sudden drop from -18 to -9, then it has settled at -6 with the occasional jump up a couple of degrees.
I will try the total defrost over next day or so – can you let me know if it worked for you. If it didn’t what did you do? I have tried Miele and their callout charge for a Miele engineer is £87.50 !!!!!!!!!!!!! They are having a laugh.

The defrost worked a treat on my fridge (I’m kevw1972) and its now working perfectly. After defrost I left it on super cool overnight before re-stocking and it hit a record minus 41oC!!!!!!!!!!! Brrrrrr.
I took the panel off the inside of the freezer unit and exposed lots of nice inner workings, which were completeley encased in masses of ice. There was so much it took about 40 mins with a hair dryer to melt it all.
The lesson I have leared is that frost free freezers do need to be defrosted regularly, even very expensive ones, and the support lines at Miele are totally useless. All they did for me was give me the number of their local Miele approved engineer, they could have easily spotted the symptoms of a freezer in need of defrost, but I had to come to this forum instead. Boo to Miele, cheers to ukwhitegoods!
As to how what the best way to defrost is, its probably not to do it my way with a hairdryer, but to leave it off for a few days to let nature take its course. I didnt want to wait and didn’t want a huge puddle either, but I knew the risks of taking bits off and my warrantee had expired anyway.

if the miele in question is a liebherr built appliance, F4 usually means a fault with the evaporator sensor, generally meaning engineer time.
of course, turning the whole unit off for a length of time, thereby defrosting the unit, will prove to be a temporary fix, but you’re still left with a faulty thermistor.
frost free appliances, by definition, do not have to be defrosted regularly, whether they’re expensive, or otherwise
