Okay so basically from looking at the manual this machine can do up to a 5kg load if it is on a cottons cycle.
I have started to weigh my laundry to make sure I am not overloading the machine.
I weighed a load this morning with luggage scales attached to my very light linen basket and it came in at 4.7kg. So i thought that is great. Though to my sight it looked far too big of a load to fit in this small machine.
I have been using the Ariel 3 in 1 pods colour and style for my colours because though I am not sure I think the liquid prevents fading.
I live in a hard water area but on the box it says only to use 2 tablets if the load is heavily soiled in hard water.
My load wasn’t dirty. Just needed cleaning as stuff generally does.
I found at first it didn’t look like the clothing and items had much room to move and the tablet hardly sudsed up at all. as the main wash progressed as the items got wetter it looked to move around a lot better but i noticed some items had dry patches. It was only really in the rinse that everything got saturated.
some things smelled great, a lot of the load didn’t smell bad nor good.
So is the 5kg weight not true? Should it really only be about 3.5-4kg of laundry?
Do I need to use 2 tablets if I do a fuller load from now on even if the load isn’t heavily soiled? I am considering the Ariel coloured powder if its better but I worry that because its powder it will still be quite harsh on the colours.
    Thoughts people?
    Thanks

Weight is irrelevant in large part. The weight is the absolute maximum permissible weight only, not volume.

    Volume is far more important.

So you are saying I should just leave a 10 cm gap at the top?
you could still technically overfill a machine in doing that.
It depends if you have really squashed down your clothing.

But then why do they bother stating weights? isn’t it pointless?

    Pretty much, yes.

The EU says everyone has to so, all do in order to comply.

This may help explain why: http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/help/buyi … truth.html

So the only real use of knowing the weight of your load would be for dosing the correct amount of powder/liquid

Not really, it just helps I guess.

Detergent dose is determined by the load size, soiling level and water hardness generally so there are more things to consider than just one factor. Sadly that’s the bit you need to work out every time.

i know the soiling level and water hardness factor in, however even though this is a hard water area i find usually using what is suggested for soft water sud’s up enough and stops it from getting to soapy.

By load size do you mean the weight of it or by how much volume is takes up?

Detergent producers say on the boxes how much to put in for an amount like 4kg-6kg and so on but are they referring to the washing machine size or the load size?

Re: Miele Novotronic W864- 5kg load really?

I mean volume, weight is as I said, largely meaningless.

Detergent manufacturers offer a guide based on the load capacity but it is important to remember that this is a guide, not anything more than that. And, they’re hardly liable to tell you to use less than is you might actually need to.

    https://www.dazwhite.co.uk/dosing.php
The Daz site shows that its based on the machine not the load
