Hi. ๐
Could I please ask you a couple of questions about our Miele Premier 520 washing machine (model number: W522)?
This machine is very nearly a year old, with a three-year Miele all-inclusive warranty (special promotion at the time), but we have noticed two problems recently:
1. The major problem is this: we noticed the machine allowing 1200rpn spins on the Woollens programme today, which is surely not right! Since new, and until now, the machine has limited it to 400, but it now allows a 1200rpm spin! We noticed this today after my husband, who has some experience of domestic appliances, put the machine on Woollens for a small load of wool socks. There was no issue with balancing, but the machine went straight to 1200rpm. Carl noticed the extra noise from the high speed and we managed to turn it right down to 400.
However, the machine still allows us to set 1200rpm as the spin speed for this programme! We powered the machine off at the mains for a few minutes and put it back on again, but the problem still remains.
The machine remembers the spin speeds and other settings (Water plus on or off) for each programme as we go along, even after removing the mains power, but the machine still allows 1200rpm spins on Woollens, which it never did before. The machine will remember to do a 400rpm spin it set manually on the front panel, but the machine is meant to limit the spin speed to 400rpm on this programme anyway. The woollen socks were certainly well spun and ready to go in the Miele dryer! ๐
2. Finally, the machine appears to be starting to get more โjumpyโ when trying to balance loads. I know this will happen from time to time, but we have all noticed it becoming more noticeable when attempting to balance loads. This was even noticeable when speaking to one of Carlโs friends on the telephone a few days ago, who remarked, โWhat was THAT?!โ when the machine began to spin โ it was quite unbalanced when starting to spin only, although the machine does manage to spin properly and does not make any more extra noise once it has got past those initial few seconds of โwobbleโ!
This machine is well sited, level and does not actually move as such when balancing, but its internals seems to move more than they used to when trying. The machine has not been moved since new. The floor is solid (not floorboards).
This machine is still under its one-year warranty and will start its extended one for an extra two years with Miele soon (free-of-charge). That includes labour, parts and call-outs.
Is there any way around these problems โ say, a reset โ or could it be that the electronics are malfunctioning in this machine, thus needing a Miele engineer to visit? We have all the paperwork ready to call them, but we thought we should ask you here first, especially as several of you gave us very good advice on what to buy. ๐ Thanks for that, which has saved us all a lot of headaches with what are often poor quality machines from some makes.
We do all the maintenance suggestions โ avoiding liquids/capsules (unless requires for the odd load) and always using the right amount of good quality detergents (Ariel or Persil) โ mostly non-colour ones, too โ as well as weekly 60 degree washes for bedding, etc., no quick washes and the usual monthly 95 degree maintenance wash with biological (non-colour) quality powder.
We understand Mieles have to be looked at by their engineers generally because of their nature, but we felt we should ask first so that we may have some background information for the visiting engineer.
Many thanks.
Regards
Jackie (and Carl!)

Check the fluff filter before the engineer calls – that will not be covered by warranty. If it is trying to spin with excess water in the drum and clothes, then it will jump or seem unbalanced. ๐
Woollens can be spun at high speed, but usually the spin cycle is shortened. The machine will override the manual controls on the fascia if they are incorrect for the programme set.HTH,
Steve.

I know the ones with the Honeycomb care system can have a higher spin speed, but surely the machine should be limiting the speed. If the guarantee is still applicable, I’d get them out.

Hi, if you have an issue or think its not going right get them out to look at it.
They will be able to tell if theres a problem or not.
From experience I know that the machine will remember your last setting, so if you set a program, (cottons or delicates) to spin at 400 next time you select same programme it will revert to saved setting. -
