miele td model t494c can anyone tell me how to access the element as it appears to be behind the drum. does the drum need to be removed or can access be gained via the panel on the inside of the drum at the rear

Access it from inside drum, backplate comes off, allen key needed. Turn drum around with your hand until the studs line up.

i removed the six hex screws but nothing moved and didnt want to force it

did you have to undo the six bolts for the removal of the backplate before you gain access to these two hidden bolts?
