ParticipantHi,
My Miele W3922WPS has developed a very loud squeaky noise when the drum spins. It has been doing it for a few days, first noticeable when it was left in anti-crease after a wash, and a loud creaking noise every time the drum turned.
Today on emptying the machine after a wash, there was a strong burning type smell and what seemed like steam, but I suspect was smoke. Maybe burning rubber smell ….. or possibly electric ?
If I spin the drum in either direction by hand, I get the same loud creaky sound. Video here :

It is about 10 months outside its 10 year warranty, and based on the symptoms, the cost to repair is probably too high to justify, but thought I’d post here before scrapping it.
Any help or suggestions much appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve.

Moderatorthat is the drum catching the rubber. Check the door rubber is not misplaced but I suspect the drum spider may have failed causing the drum to get closer to the rubber.
if you look at the video at the drum lip you can see its not true. it goes up and down as the drum is revolvedyou could try moaning at miele that a major component has failed so early in the predicted life cycle and you never know they may give you an allowance off a new one. If you don’t ask you don’t get

ParticipantMany thanks for the quick reply.
If it is the drum spider, any rough idea on the cost to get it replaced ?
Thanks,
Steve.

Moderatora lot is all I can say. if its under £300 I would be surprised. not only will the part be expensive its a complete strip down to install it
try giving miele and ask for the drum spider or carrier price. its bolted on the back of the inner drum
this may not be exactly like yours but it give you an idea

ParticipantThanks Dave.
I just taken the top off and had a look inside. All looks in great condition …… seems a shame to scrap it.
Is there a way to check if it is the drum spider ? If it is bolted to the back of the inner drum, I assume without stripping it down, it is hard to tell ?
All I can see is something like this : https://www.ebay.ie/itm/miele-washing-machine-W524-drum-spider-drum-support-n-nr6045601-ekad-70/163723165187
Thanks,

Moderatorthat’s the outer one that contains the bearing system. the one that’s gone is immersed in water when the machine is in use
and I am 90{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} certain its gone

ParticipantThanks Dave.
Not sure how it fits with your suspicion, but if I push back of the drum from the inside, I can easily get it to hit the back of the machine. I tried the same on a new machine in a shop, and it was rock solid with no movement.
New spider from Miele is £418, as it only comes with all the drum bearings. Then it needs to be fitted !
I can get a new basic Miele WDB020 for £500 in the current sales, so looks like this one is heading to the scrap yard.

Moderatoryou are moving the whole drum unit which is on springs, that normal
you problem is the inner drum is out of line with the outer drum due to the drum spider fracturing due to corrosion

ParticipantOk thanks.
Would you say it is ok to use for a few more times, until a replacement arrives ?
Thanks,
Steve.

Moderatorshort answer no
you have a drum that’s rubbing on the door seal. that friction causes heat, on spin, which rubs off the rubber and you will get lots of little grey rubber bits all over your clothes
if you are prepared to use it with no spin then it will be ok but your washing will be dripping when you get it out
