ParticipantI have a faulty Miele W5748 that I’ve been trying to troubleshoot. I opened it up and found the part linked below on the floor of the machine. Anyone any ideas what it is? TIA

ParticipantHi there,
I have a Miele W5748 washing machine. Owned since new in 2011 (3500 hours on the clock). Recently, it has started powering off a few minutes into a cycle, as if the plug has been pulled.
It still works if I do a cold wash, but as soon as I use a cycle with anything warmer than ‘cold’, ie. 20 degrees plus, it will run the cycle normally for a few minutes, and then completely cut out.
It initially showed a fault code of F15/F20 in the service menu, so I replaced the water heating element. It did one successful run at 40 degrees for a short 20-minute wash, then failed again during the next attempt at a normal wash cycle (failed after about 15 minutes with the same complete loss of power).
When I re-checked the fault code, it now showed F10, which pointed to the water inlet. I then replaced the water inlet valve, but that has also failed to fix it.
Symptoms remain the same, it will successfully run through a cold wash, at any length of cycle, but as soon as I try any programme with 20 degrees or more, it cuts out after anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes. Fault code shows F0.
My next port of call was to examine the control board – ELP165S on this particular machine. I had read about the TNY278GN chip overheating, but on inspection, it doesn’t appear to be damaged. Visually all parts of the board look good (checking online, the TNY278GN has completely blown out on some of the pictures). I have no idea how to test for continuity/resistance etc.
I’m completely stumped and I’m now looking for help…
NB. I found what looked like a little plastic washer on the floor when I removed the front cover and I have posted a thread on that asking for possible ID help.
TIA
Mark

Moderatorhave no idea what that is
miele parts tend to have part numbers stamped on them, any on this ?
have merged topics it makes things easier
if the tny chip is at fault it just shuts down with blank display, assume yours does not
does it shut down as the heater energises ?

DaveHi Dave – yes it completely shuts down, as if the plug has been pulled.

ParticipantUpdate to this problem.
I have now successfully managed to run a warm wash by placing a blob of blu-tack over the TNY278GN chip, so I think this chip is faulty and getting too hot. The blu-tack dissipated some of the excess heat.
Now for the million dollar question – I’ve ordered some little heat-sinks and pads, that I will place over the chip rather than using blu-tack (for obvious reasons!).
I’ve also orderd a new TNY278GN chip on eBay (from Germany). When I get it, will it just be a case of desoldering the old chip and sticking the new one in its place? I’m far from an expert in soldering, but looking at the chip, it seems quite straight-forward.
TIA
