ParticipantMy 9 yr old machine is running well except that it has started intermittently tripping the consumer box RCD. I connected it to a non RCD socket and it runs perfectly but I am wondering why it has started doing this.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Faulty component leaking to earth. Heater would be a good place to start – test with a megger if you have one. If not try running a cold wash and see if it still trips.

ParticipantAlmost all Miele repairs is a three step and simple process.
Step 1
Get a bank loan
Step 2
Phone Miele
Step 3
Pay Miele the money you have that is demanded
Very easy system to follow.
And it is getting worse not better with the new machines that you cannot reset at all for almost anything you just have to call them and pay whatever they demand.
A friend of mine that left Miele recently told me how much they make from service and if you knew you would be astounded. Miele customers get ripped off on aftercare.
But you can buy the stuff to do it for £20,000 if you like!

hi,
Think you would struggle to get a bank loan for that extortionate amount 😆 (sorry!)
hehe

Thanks for the tip odom. I don’t have a megger but will disconnect the heater and run a test wash.

Thanks Whirl4 that’s also my experience. We’ll be replacing the WM next year and guess what – it won’t be another Miele. Even with my O level maths I’ve worked out that I can buy 2 mid range machines for the cost of my Miele plus the £350 spare parts cost I have incurred on my 9yr old machine (and this is with me doing the repairs myself – dread to think what it would have cost to get a Miele engineer in)

Some feedback which might be of help to others. I disconnected the heater and tried a test wash – RCD was still tripping. I then disconnected the drain pump and ran a test wash – no tripping. I repeated the tests several times running the wash through to rinse and then emptying the drum manually, before spinning so I’m pretty certain the drain pump is the culprit. I’ll replace the brushes at the same time and try to squeeze another year out of the old dog.

hi finescan,
Thats is what i like to hear
If possible, fix instead of throw. (especially on the better quality products like miele/ise)
However i wonder if it had been a one of the newer model whether diy’ing is as easy, i have read a lot saying ‘not’ 🙁

On removing the old pump (really simple – lift the retaining tab and twist) I found that the problem seems to have been caused by a drip of water onto the winding casing which was badly corroded. A couple of years back I changed the hose that connects the soap tray to the drum and I suspect that there was a leak onto the pump motor before that.
Since the motor is directly below the soap tray and plumbing to the drum I would have thought Miele might have absorbed the cost of a plastic film over the pump to protect it (like e.g Hotpoint and Hoover) – but then again since they are charging 192.00 plus vat for a replacement pump motor, maybe they reckon it’s better business to leave it out.
(…no. I ain’t that stupid – I’ve ordered one from whitegoods spares)

hi finescan,
So 😀 you have ‘sussed’ the problem and are able to keep the ‘old dog’ going for hopefully a good while longer
best wishes

ParticipantNew motor arrived from whitegoods spares within a few days. The replacement motor was quite a bit larger and heavier than the original and the connectors were in a different place. i did have my doubts that it would fit.
I found that I could not fit the replacement without removing the drain filter assembly from the machine. (I could emove and refit the Miele part in situ) The motor was a VERY tight fit and I had to place the filter assembly on the floor and put all of my weight on the motor to get it to locate.
I made up an adaptor cable to connect it and refitted the assembly. Despite the hassle, the result is good, the pump runs quietly, no RCD tripping, a happy wife and £150 + saved compared to fitting a new Miele part.

Priceless 😀
& great to hear you’ve kept it going at a reasonable cost.
