We recently bought a Miele dishwasher and registered for the two year warranty – the company has the cheek to call it “free” when it is the legal minimum.

Today an offer to extend the warranty for a further three years at a cost of £149 dropped through our letter box.

This got me wondering. In their promotional material Miele are quite explicit in claiming that their machines are designed and tested to last 20 years. For that claimed quality you pay a significant premium.

Given average domestic use you would expect the machine to be fault free for at least five years. If push came to shove would the retailer have a leg to stand on if you insisted on a warranty repair beyond the initial two years?

    Hi Jumpty

The “law” of the land so to speak has always been the 12 month warranty, the EU wide 2 year warranty was never adopted by the UK.

Miele among others do offer a two year warranty as long as the appliance has been registered with the underwriting insurer who I believe in this instance is still Domestic and General, who will then mail shot you with the normal extenended warranty offer. After all the extra year does cost so to speak and by offering you an extended warranty may claw back some of the underwriting.

You then get into the “six year rule”? This thread from Martins Money covers.

Yes Miele appliances are supposedly designed and tested for twenty years use but not “guaranteed to do so”. ATEOTD it comes down to use and care it gets.

The Sale of goods act is not one of the easiest acts to follow and it is very grey in some areas to say the least.

If your purchase was via the net then you also come into the distance selling rules which is yet another confusing area.

    HTH 🙂

ISE used to, but due to the strength of the euro it was decided to discontinue it. But you never know in the future……………….

    Hi Jumpty,

Basically, there’s no legal requirement beyond “reasonable” and “fit for purpose”, it’s really not very helpful. :rolls:

But, ti has to protect retailers from mad customers as well as customers from mad retailers!

On an ISE dishwasher, we might have something to announce… FINALLY, next year as it looks as if I’ve gotten my way. 😉

It won’t be cheap but it will be the best.

    K.
