Hi all – my Caple double oven is mucking about – main fan oven element blew recently – tripped the main RCCD, and was easy to spot and fix. Now the top oven’s playing up – grill works fine, ‘stat light comes on when top oven is selected but no heat.

Seems there’s a ‘buried’ bottom element in the oven bottom – reading 46ohms; the combined top element (grill and oven I presume?) is reading 70ohms at the outside tags, and 23ohms at the inside. There’s nothing visually obvious – do these sound reasonable or should I be looking elsewhere (‘stat?), or . . .

Why do we always start these jobs too late at night??!! Many thanks for any assistance.

Stat or commutator switch if you have resistance across the elements are the most likely candidates unless there’s an overheat stat there that’s blown.

Thanks for that, K – sorry to be dense, but what should I expect from my meter if testing the ‘stat? (I’m used to dealing with music gear, but cookers are virgin territory!)

Oven thermostat is a make and break switch, so either zero ohms or infinite, depending on whether switch is open or closed.

Turned out to be an overheat thermal cutout thingy . . . thanks for all the advice. Kudos to all involved in the site – it’s great to have access to yer pooled wisdom!
