Daily Mail wrote:Beware of the exploding washing machine doors! Safety alert over Zanussi, Bosch and Hoover after after glass shatters for no reason
More than 50 incidents have been investigated by Which?
Users on consumer websites reported glass doors exploding on machines less than two months old

It will do little to encourage those members of the household who are already reluctant to go anywhere near the laundry basket.
Families are reporting their washing machine doors exploding – firing shards of glass across kitchen floors without warning.
In some cases, doors have apparently shattered when the machine is not even in use, while other users claim to have had the glass simply fall out of its casing.

Broken: Owners of two models of Miele washing machines, the W1613 (left) and the W3740, have reported incidents where the glass doors have exploded both when in use and when turned off

Caution: Which? warns that the glass doors on machines like this Beko have shattered
Consumer champion Which? is carrying out an investigation into more than 50 incidents, which reportedly include major brands such as Beko, Miele, Zanussi, Bosch, Hoover, LG and Samsung.
Home product researcher Adrian Porter said the problem first appeared around 18 months ago but that the number of cases has risen sharply in recent months.
Many of those affected have posted accounts of their experiences on the website Whitegoodshelp.
One claimed: ‘Bought a Beko washing machine less than two months ago and 20 minutes ago the glass shattered.
‘It was on a final spin and sent the shards of glass all over the kitchen floor and the clothes inside are covered in very sharp pieces.’
Another contributor alleged: ‘My Miele W3740 washing machine glass door suddenly exploded, shedding glass and water around the room.
The machine is only 20 months old so still within guarantee.’
Of the reported cases, 12 apparently involved machines that were off. One website user claimed: ‘My Miele W1613 had been unused for a few days when a bang was heard. On inspection the inner glass door had exploded. Just to clarify: it was not in use at the time.’
Discussing the Which? investigation, Mr Porter said: ‘This hasn’t happened to any washing machines during our lab tests, so we have been unable to observe it in laboratory conditions and follow up with a proper analysis.

‘But going through the accounts, there are theories ranging from hair cracks in the glass, or even that the glass is just thinner than it used to be.
    Still, nothing has been confirmed.
It has also been suggested by a manufacturer that the glass may have been weakened by scratches caused by hard items like zip ends and belt buckles striking the door during the wash.
‘We have contacted the manufacturers, and they are looking into the problem.’
A spokesman for Beko, whose machines have generated the largest number of reports on Whitegoodshelp, said: ‘Whilst we have no reason to believe that there is a fault with our washing machine range, we are investigating these incidents in full and always take such matters seriously.’
Alex Walker of Miele said: ‘We conducted an investigation.?.?. [which] confirmed we have had no recent reports of such an incident.’
The other manufacturers under investigation did not respond to requests for comment last night.

    Re: More shattering news!

Would suspect this is caused by overloading & the drum scraping against the glass.
Once its scored it can shatter at any time.

    well written k ,

maybe stem the hype of the uneducated customers who buy cheap crap and expect them to wash over loads and all sorts of stuff that go unchecked before loading machine.

Well I’m totally flummoxed over this, as in all the donkeys years fuff in’ about with washers I have never come across a shattered door glass. 😯

As for the case of the one that (apparently?) shattered when it wasn’t even in use…?

Could it be a case of poltergeist activity in affected homes?

Andy Trigg came up with this article so it would be interesting to learn of his findings.

Good article Ken.I think the same regarding overloading the drums. There are quite a few users who mistreat there appliances with the couldn’t careless attitudes ! but then make a song and dance about it when some thing goes wrong .

    Re: More shattering news!

Iv only ever change 2 glasses. The first the customer dropped a cup on it. The second was on a 3 day old washer drier, went through a number of washes fine but 30 minutes into the first dry the glass went. It did go like a bomb going off according to the customer but as there was a second heat shielding in front of the glass it only went into the tank Can only assume there was a Small air bubble in the glass and when it expanded bang.

I would be interested to know who makes the door glass. Are they coming from one source?
