ParticipantMy machine stopped working, leaving a pile of wet clothes. I removed the carbon brushes and found that they were stuck, the springs were no longer pushing them forward. I “loosened” them up again and cleaned the dust off as best as possible. There is plenty of length left and the pads looked smooth. The only possible damage I could see was a small line where it looks like the two pieces of graphite were glued together like a sandwich. I also wiped the commutator with a cloth, it seems fine. I tested the machine on the spin cycle and it runs at full speed. If I turn the lights off, I can barely see the motor giving off some light, but only when it turns counterclockwise. I don’t want to burn my house down. Is this typical of a motor problem or could it simply be the carbon brushes? Can I ignore it?

I’ve never heard of a Seg myself but I would suggest you replace the motor brushes and their holders complete. The symptoms indicative of heavy, continual useage where the motor runs red hot and the carbons overheat in their mounts. Change the brush units, clean the motor commutator AND refrain from heavy non-stop washing. (Give at least a 10 min break between washes)… 😉

I wouldn’t say it is used heavily. Normally only one load per day since I have no dryer and only have enough space to hang one load. I haven’t noticed a smell that could be due to the heat. I’m still curious why I would see flashes when spinning only in one direction.

At any one time during the rotation of the commutator each brush acts differently in that one is a leading brush and the other trailing. Their roles reversed in equal proportion during the wash and rinse cycles. The only exception to that is on the spin cycle when one brush continually acts as a leading edge brush, the consequence of that is that that brush inevitably wears down faster. The higher spin speeds create a degree of blue sparks from that leading and that is quite normal. However if the brush is worn or badly seated on the commutator the degree of sparks increases significantly.
As I mentioned previously, and from what you have told us so far, I would advise changing those brushes as a matter of course. 😉

Okay, the color I am seeing now is blue. Thanks for the feedback. As a side note, I only see the flashes at lower rpms. I will continue to monitor it but now I am less concerned. Previously I heard louder noises and saw yellow sparks. After removing and cleaning the brushes it seems improved.

It also appears the OP is posting from Germany so it could be that I’m wrong and it’s a local brand 😉
