Motor keeps running.

Hi,

I have an Ocean upright frost-free deep freezer, it is aprrox. 9 years old. The motor keeps running non-stop and the warning light is on. The temperature inside the freezer is constant but showing as 2 star performance, not 3 star. I have not talked to an engineer about this problem but I am wondering if say the repair comes to £100 plus will it be worth having done or should I be thinking ‘a new appliance’.

Could you post the model please Pat 😀

If this is a frost free model (and most Ocean’s are/were) then it may be blocked with ice, try a complete defrost for 48 hours and see how that goes.

If it isn’t frost free then it’s likely to be more serious and maybe time to think about replacing.

Model number should help confirm though.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for your quick response.
The model number is FFC 920. I’m afraid I cannot let it defrost it is approx. 8-9 cubic foot type of freezer and it is always full, no where to put the contents without losing it all.
This same problem happened in the first year I had the freezer, luckily it was still under guarantee, I cannot remember what the engineer said was causing the fault, that was roughly 8 years ago and my memory was never very good!

If the food’s started or does start to defrost it’s a case of “use it or lose it” Pat. 😕

The FFC920 was quite good for PCB failures, fan motor failures, defrost heater failures and compressor failure. If you defrost it as Dave advises it may give a clearer indication of the problem but I’d suspect either the PCB or the compressor at fault in all honesty.

Whatever happens, the contents are going to be defrosted as it’s either going to fail on it’s own or you’re going to defrost it. 🙁

Pat if the temp is rising you will lose the food anyway as Dave was asking is it frost free (has it got a fan inside the cabinet if so can you hear it could be blocked with ice? if nothing is done it will only get worse

Thanks for your reply.
Can you give me an idea as to what the repair, if possible, of any of the mentioned parts would be? Plus is it going to be worth having done in view of what you say about this model and of course it’s age – 9 years.
Is there a reliable large frost free freezer on the market?

Yes it is a frost free freezer.
What do you mean by can I hear a fan inside the cabinet? All I can hear is the motor constantly running is that what you mean or should there be another sound, I do not ever remember another type of sound coming from the freezer.

Frost free cabinet: is the motor you can hear running constantly the compressor? If you open the freezer door can you hear a fan running?

hi,

You say the temp is constant, so a frosted evaporater will give -4 roughly with the fan jammed, giving defrosted ice cream and bread. If you have a colder temperature than this you have a system fault, for instance a 2 star freezer keeps food for 2 months but still achieves -18 with ease, if your red light is on you have warmer than -12 and therefore need an engineer.

Its worth an engineer looking and advising you accordingly. I would charge for such advice £47.00 inc Vat, hope that helps.

Go into repairs@ once you’ve decided to seek help and are prepared to pay for it.
