Motor Not Spinning, Water Not Filling – Whirlpool 320/4

hi folks, my whirlpool 320/4 washer drier stopped during the wash cycle, the water drained away ok but the drum wont turn, if i start a new program it wont fill with water, you here a quick jet of water for half a second and then it goes off, it continues doing this. If i start a spin program the pump sounds as though its running but still no drum spinning. 8)

the belt is on, i removed the motor and checked the brushes, there is still loads of length in them but they are very sooty. Does this sound like the culprit and would this cause the machine not to fill?? 😕

What do the ends of the brushes look like? They should both be nice and shiny, not rough, dark and pitted.

hi mate thanks for the reply, they are a bit pitted, i took pics so hopefully that will help determining if the brushes are faulty.

They are not totally gone but they don’t look great, sadly poor brush ends when there is still a lot of length left in the brushes is a sign of impending motor failure.

They should still be making contact with the commutator though.

yeah they were making contact and they did not appear to be stuck either. so whats next, i can get new brushes but should i test the motor to see if it has failed??

hi. i dont know what the h8.1 module is, i did a search and it shows a circuit board thingy lol. I cant see anything like that in the top, is that where it would normally be located?

plug out!!
remove back cover, module is bottom left side and you should see a label on it if its that type

Don’t want to sound rude mystic, but do you have any electrical experience or test equipment as the fault is a process of elimination of a couple of parts to see if its the module
thats causing the problem

i have a cheapo multi meter lol

my electrical experience is basic ie just diy stuff really. There are electricians at my work, am i able to remove the module or other parts needing tested and ask them to have a look at it?

ok plug out ,no live testing.
This is actually a Servis built machine, first don’t know if motor is still out but check wires to motor plug and socket by pulling wires lightly to see if any breaks as the copper wire can break but the insulation can hold it in place.
You need to test the heating element for continuity and insulation (don’t remove the heater because you will not get it back in)
Remove module from holder by unscrewing holder from machine there is a plastic tab at front of holder push down lightly and then remove module from holder.
Remove connectors from module (noting what goes where) check underside of module for any signs of burning ,dry joints or any other damage especially the silver segments where the connector blocks connect.
If it all looks ok then try crimping down all connectors inside the blocks lightly with a pair of pliers (by squeezing on the plastic don’t remove the wires) reassemble and give it a try.
If it is still not working then I would think the module has gone. You have to remember the advice I am giving is based on normal faults I have come across as an engineer but experience has taught me that other
obscure faults in other components can make the module do weird things. If i can offer a bit of a advice i think it would be better to pay a qualified engineer to look at the machine and pay him £30 ish for a proper
diagnosis as this could possibly save you £££££s and a lot of stress.
