ParticipantI just brought a 2nd hand fridge for my son, it was only a year and half old. We had no choice but to place it on its side. We plugged it in and it worked perfectly, but now it wont work at all. Thought all would be okay as long as the back wasn’t damaged. The fridge has a sticker on the door stating it has a 5 year guarantee (hotpoint i think) can anyone tell me how much this would cost, what it might be, and if there is any chance the manufacturer would cover this fault without a reciept (only have the booklet)

Oh dear….did you leave it to stand for a few hours before plugging it in and switching on…you would at least have had a 50/50 chance if it had been laid on the correct side 😯
If the compressor hums, clicks then stops it means the compressor oil has got into the system and blocked it. The only cure is to replace the complete evaporator with all the regassing that goes with it 😕
Unless it has sentimental value or is a big expensive model the best thing is to learn by your mistake and buy another one….probably not what you wanted to hear :rolls:

To coin a phrase, oh dear, oh dear, oh dear….
Sorry. 🙁
Basically what has almost certainly happened is that the oil in which the compressor motor is suspended, has made its way up into the system and choked it. You should never, ever if at all possible transport a fridge, freezer or fridge freezer on its side and, if you do, you should let it stand (unplugged) for at the very least 8-24 hours before you use it or you risk this.
If it is choked then the chances of a fix are slim.
If it can be fixed it involves re-gassing and clearing the system, if it’s possible, which will cost.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings.
