TBH honest folks…
There’s more than a few people that have moved to Scotland for the same reasons. The thought of an idyllic country life, fewer pressures and better schools among many another reason for moving to a more picturesque surrounding.
Thing is, it’s just a different set of problems for the most part.
We’ve got loads of people that have moved North for all the reasons to move to Cornwall which, I can say from personal experience, is a lovely part of the world to visit, but I’m not so sure making a living there would be easy in the least.
Same thing with huge swathes of Scotland. It isn’t as idyllic or as easy as it first appears. If it were, more people would do it.
Just my tuppence worth.

Mr.T wrote:So it’s a no go then!! I’m trying to get my manager to sort me something down that way, he said he’ll look into it for me, ie. run through the figures and see what he gets. He also said that if he can’t offer me an employed position then he’s willing to give me all the work he currently gives agents down that way, so might be the way forward…
Hey Mike, why Cornwall for heavens sake?
Old codgers retire there, grockels come down in their camper vans in the summer and block all the narrow roads. Spaced out surfers crash out in Newquay and everyones breath stinks of garlic and fish in Polperro. Not to mention that it rains there 300 days of the year, so it’s not a good choice mate to be honest! 😉
Coupled with the fact that those guys down there that are eeking a living from what little this trade has to offer us, won’t be best pleased at a new boy pinching their meagre agency work! 🙁
But, if you are still set on Cornwall and you’re up for earning a crust whilst you’re there then I know for a fact there’s is a shortage of skilled roofers, tilers and carpet fitters. If you can lay your hand to any of those skills…you’ll do well my son! 8)

Hi Martin,
For a start, I surf, so can’t think of anywhere I’d rather be!! I’ll also be an old codger one day so it saves me moving in the future!!
The guys down there have nothing to worry about, after all, if there’s enough work for a CDA engineer, they’ll put one there anyway as they prefer to use their own guys than agents… so if it’s gonna happen, then it’s gonna happen, nothin I can do about it!
And I don’t really want to start re-training at this stage. I’m already Corgi and refrigeration so I’m sure that if it’s what I really want, then I’ll be ok.
I can see the angle people are coming from, but if the shoe were on the other foot, you would be asking the same question as me. You’ve wanted to live there for years, the wife says let’s move then, you start doing some research, etc. You can’t tell me most of you haven’t thought about it at some stage in your life/career??
And the fact that it rains so much? When you’re in the sea surfin, a bit more water makes no difference!! And it won’t stop me fixin machines either!! Let’s face it, I’d rather be in Cornwall in the rain than stuck on the M6!!!!!!
Thanks for your replies, but I can see I’m going to meet some opposition and I don’t want to cause any problems, so I’ll leave it there. Whatever will be, will be…
Regards, Mike.

Very good. 😉
I wish I could move North. Sure you have the midges and the rain, the snow and the lack of civilisation but it’s nice in the sticks. And, you can even catch the odd wave up by Macrahanish. 😉

Hi Mike,
Sounds like you’ve got the right attitude. And sufficient training.(Quite a bit more than me). So I hope what I said didn’t put you off. If you can ride the slack times and take a drop in labour rate (I should think) then you should get by OK down here. (But don’t quote me on that!)
Have to say I’ve only seen two CDA machines in 12 years but maybe they don’t come to independents like me(?). You’ll need to cover all or most makes if you want enough work, either that or a very wide area.
There again they’re planning to build thousands upon thousands of new homes around here according to the council’s 20 year plan. So maybe we’re going to become a bit more urbanised? All has to be done without increasing the road provision though!!! :hmm: And against massive public opposition. :nono:

I actually hope they don’t change it TBH.
I was in Padstow a while back and, much to my surprise, there had been a new estate plonked up the top of the hill, most distressing as it just wasn’t in the character of the place. Shame, really as it’s the charm that keeps people coming back, not the fact that Rick Stein owns half of it or whatever.
I like the North coast of Cornwall a fair bit, lovely part of the world.
It’s just a pity that developers are let rip there and many other places where the local people can’t afford to buy a home because the damn tourists keep buying holiday homes there. 🙁
Or people think that moving to these places is the answer.
When I retire I’d love to move either as far North on the West coast as possible or as far South on the North coast as I can get, preferably round Padstow or round the ways to Porthcothan. It’ll probably not happen as I reckon I’m due a heart attack long before that comes around.
But Argyll is just as pretty, if not more so and further North up that way is just stunning.
However I do know that area of North Cornwall well enough, doing anything with the roads is just silly. They are entertaining if nothing else, especially for the caravaners but they certainly shouldn’t be altered on account of the people that choose to got there with a silly mobile home strapped to their rear bumper. It’s really funny watching them when they realise they’ve no choice but to revere a few hundred yards to a passing place then realising that they’ve never had to do that before. 😉

I didn’t really want to post on this thread. I’m from Widemouth Bay. I’d live there still – the surf is the second best in Cornwall (although I can’t do the plank of wood thing) and it’s just a good place to be. For the life of me, I can’t see how to make a repair business pay. Perhaps 5 calls a day, with a fifty mile drive between each? I don’t think so.
North Leeds it is then; 50 miles a day max to do lots of calls, perfect. We live out near the airport and can be in the countryside in about 5 minutes, so that’ll do for me.
Mr. T has a good advantage with Corgi and Refrigeration, so who really knows? LPG module for all those houses in the country would be a real boon, too.
Good luck, whatever you choose to do. Just don’t sell yourself short.
Chris.

Think i may be able to offer some help here to Mr T if he is still looking,
see what you really want is an established business to buy into, with all the right things in place to make it work,
so
An established business, comes with a new(ish) van still under warranty, whole van full of stock, (finely tuned over the years to ensure 95{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}+ 1st visit completion), regular work coming in from a work provider, plus private customers too,
Also comes with a detached house, (4beds) garden, garage, parking, in an out of town location whilst still central to the work area, there you go, dig deep & make me the right offer & all you have to do is drive down here, move into the house, jump in the van & your ready to go!!

I don’t get it, we are very busy and I am seriously considering taking on another engineer.
Problem is, they don’t seem to be out there.
