ParticipantHi all. Considering moving to Cornwall and wondered if there are any engineers from that area that can say what it’s like to work there… Are the mileages crazy? Are you very busy? Are there many jobs available? What’s the good companies that operate down there? etc.
Any advice would be helpful because once I have work secured I’m off!! 😀
Cheers, Mike.

hi, im down in cornwall too, very very quiet, if you want to work for a company expect around £16k to be the max pay, but not many big companies down here, comet may be worth a call,
have you been down here for a look around then?,

Blimey, must be dearer to live in Somerset, I’d never offer such a low rate of pay, if I did I’d not have any takers.

the jobs scene here is very scarce, nothing around, there was an employed position advertised last month, had to be multi skilled & with refridgeration too, £16k, hasnt been for several months now, would take someone very very brave or with a LOT of money behind them to make it work, plus the house prices are still way over the average, i would not venture out on my own, several indie engineers have stopped trading in the last few years,

Have to confirm what hotpnt says. I moved down here 12 years ago. I’ve always been a bit lazy and unambitious at heart so the slow pace kind of suits me 🙂 . It’s taken me those 12 years to get established and the only way I can make it pay anything like a reasonable profit has been to ditch the car and go everywhere by bike. The only serious competition around for me at the moment (since most others either died or emigrated) is a local fella who advertises no call out, free estimates and, wait for it, “most jobs just £12 plus parts” 🙁

hi mike, i know the £12 guy, he’s always very busy but not sure how many are done for £12 though, one of the big problems is like you say the travelling costs, not unusual to cover 80 miles for 6 calls!, there aint alot around at the moment, also doesnt help with tesco’s & all selling things for under £200

Hi htpnt,
I think the £12 guy must be on holiday at the moment the way my phone’s been ringing off the hook! I hope he comes back soon, I like an easy life. As for distance, I stick to a 10 mile radius max. and that only 270 degrees.

So it’s a no go then!! I’m trying to get my manager to sort me something down that way, he said he’ll look into it for me, ie. run through the figures and see what he gets. He also said that if he can’t offer me an employed position then he’s willing to give me all the work he currently gives agents down that way, so might be the way forward…
Thanks for the input guys, much appreciated, just was hoping for better news than that posted so far!! At least it’s been honest, which is exactly what I wanted.
By the way, are most of you down there self employed then, that’s the impression I get from your posts. Don’t Hotpoint, Miele, Hoover, etc have engineers down there???
Thanks again,
Mike.
