    Over the past few years I have fitted many 8mf ( CAP08) capacitors to Hotpoint/Creda condensor dryers, mostly without any problems.

    Last year I had one on which the capacitor I fitted failed again within a few weeks, and again a few weeks later. When new capacitor is fitted the motor runs perfectly smoothly, no obvious outward damage on capacitor.
    Not heard from that one for over 6 months now, may be resolved or customer may have thrown in the towel.

    Had another one today, this time the original failed capcitor had burst out of the side, not quite as bad as the one in the photo gallery. Replaced and machine worked perfectly for 2 weeks then failed again, the new capacitor also had the grey worm oozing out of the side. Replaced it and away it went without any problems.

    Strange thing is that both machines are Creda 37754 models ??

    Or have I had a batch of dodgy capacitors, I only carry a couple so don’t have them hangnig around a long time.

    Interesting that PF lists the cap as a 7uf, part number X245592.

    I don’t suppose it would make too much difference as they normally have a +/- 10{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} tollerance ??

    Did try a 7mf on the one last year, although the one I replaced recently definately had an 8mf as original.
    Might be worth trying a gen one just in case, although when it arrives it will more than likely be exactly the same as the Qualtex one. 😥

    Funny thing is that on PF the capacitor for the 37754 is listed as
    X245592 7UF capacitor and the one for the Hotpoint TDC30 range is listed as a 1701581 7MFD capacitor?

    An 8 mf (CAP08) is the ideal replacement as you no doubt agree. And the failure I often put down to a combination of bad ventilation of the appliance coupled with high ambient temperatures (during the summer months).

    However the later series of Hotpoint/Creda dryers with the direct drive stretch belt (usually 7.5mf capacitors) fail so often I reckon due to being underated in the first place. 🙄 But again the CAP08 sorts them out OK 😀

    The actual capacitance value is not important as long as it is large enough to handle the current demand of the motor, any excess capacitance above this is simply not used. The main reason that smaller capacitors are used is they are cheaper!

    What is critical is the working voltage of the capacitor. The higher this is rated above the supply voltage, the less stress upon the capacitor dielectric and consequently longer life.

    Andy, That is definitely not true!

    The motor running temperature rises almost exponentially with an increase in capacitance. The correct rating capacitor should always be use to achieve the correct starting torque. Very important on condenser dryers that have a very short pause between reversing.

    I used to use CAP08 but had too many failures in tumble driers, I now used the genuine metal clad, Crosslee one, without any failures at all.

    What you say is theoretically true, but in practice it does not make a noticable difference. I have sometimes substituted a 20mF cap for a 14mF for instance and the machine functioned perfectly well, the motor showing negligable temperature increase.

    My statement was probably too loose as I did not mean to imply that the capacitance value is irrelevant, but rather that it is not as critical as the earlier posts would suggest ie. should I use a 7 or an 8mF ?

    Good point about the condenser dryers though.

    Forgot to make the point that my post was addressing the original topic of capacitor failure and that it is due to the breakdown of the dielectric.

    Apart from low quality construction this is generally attributabe to too small a margin between the working voltage and the supply voltage (again its down to cost). 🙁

    Yeh but, no but, yeh but…why have mine only failed on two Creda ones and not Hotpoint dryers, I have fitted the same CAP08 to three times more Hotpoint than Creda and never had an early failure. 😀

    How about different drum construction? If the Creda drum is harder to turn the capacitor will be engaged for longer? More heat etc – see posts above.

    Machines are almost identical in construction, drum is a 1701769 for both the Creda 37754 and Hotpoint TDC30 etc. The only real differences are the cosmetics on the front. The drum on the one I went to today was as free as any you will find.

    Do they use the same timer? It could be the length of reverse tumble and/or the duration of the pause.

    Different timers, will have to check delay intervals on both types when I get the chance.
