ModeratorHotpoint T/D TLC770.
The polystyrene float switch has shrunk to a tiny little, hard biscuit.
This is the second time in less than 12 months this has happened on this machine.
I have only seen this on one other Hotpoint dryer, that was used exclusively in a beauty salon and it was assumed at the time that some of the potions used had a chemical reaction with the polystyrene causing the float to shrivel up.
This current problem is on a domestic machine and the customer can think of nothing out of the ordinary that they are washing. I did notice it had two large ( useless ) dryer balls in it, one of which had also collapsed a little.
Has anyone else come across this and been able to pin down the cause?
It has also knackered the pump.
Jim.

I would have thought it would be far more common if it was the fabric softener but they have actually changed fabric softener to see if it made a difference. ❓

Jim, Ask them what detergent they used to clean the floor with and in which manner they do so.

I have came across a few Whirlpool condensors with the same problem over the years and Whirlpool blamed the oils in suntan lotion for the problem..

I have come across this, rarely, but I have seen it once or twice where customers (albeit cafes) do a flood mop of the kitchen floor and use caustic in the water… The fumes from the caustic soda are enough to distroy a float in a dishwasher, and it ends up looking like the one you have pictured.George

TBH I don’t think the floor has been cleaned behind the dryer for some considerable time, certainly not since I changed the last float last year. 😉
I wonder if chlorine could have the same effect, he does go swimming every day but you would expect a wash & 4 rinses would have diluted what would be a very weak concentration of chlorine on his towel and shorts etc. I wonder if he puts them straight into the dryer.:?:
