😳 Update:: Hotpoint have sent out an engineer to inspect the machine after me emailing the Directors of Hotpoint. They have discovered that the machine has had the door lock mechanism removed! It appears my Brother borrowed the machine for some time and called in an Engineer to fix a problem with the door lock. He cannot recall who this was?? I apologise to Hotpoint for this error.

We have a hotpoint WM21 Washer and it appears to be opening mid cycle. The first occasion was during the wash cycle, we came into the kitchen to discover it flooded the washer door open and it still filling, with the load of clothes on the floor. Thinking perhaps we hadn’t closed the door correctly, it worked fine for a few days. Then we heard a strange noise, discovered the washing machine door open again! whilst on FINAL SPIN! and flooding to the floor again!!!! I called Hotpoint to ALERT them to this DANGEROUS washer. The lady i spoke to said i will need an engineer to look at it, and seemed disinterested in the fact that my grandchildren could have been here and put their arm inside the drum whilst on the fast spin! Even though i had said this could have happened! They said i needed to pay for this engineer. Surely this shouldn’t happen! Are they not liable for this fault as it could have been SEVERE?? I realise it is outside of the guarantee and quite old but HOTPOINT seemed to have missed the point? 😳

Re: Hotpoint Washer, WM21, door opening mid cycle & FAST

It’ll be an old, tired door lock which needs replacing – p/no 1601698 if you wish to do it yourself.

Given that the machine will be 8/9 years old by now and Hotpoint have been through two generations of laundry products in that time, they have probably lost all interest in the product as they are disappearing repidly due to age.

Please don’t consider using it until remedial work is carried out.

And the rest, WM21 with that type of door lock introduced August 1994.

Also possible that you have a speed control breakdown, a very common occurence on these machines causing them to jump violently, forcing the door open. A difficult fault to pin down due to its intermittant nature, it can be caused by a fault in any one of three major components plus loose wiring connections and worn or failing suspension units.

If the machine was actually ‘spinning’ and not just slowing down the second time, then you do indeed have a faulty door switch as my learned friend P45 suggests.

faults do occur on machines with age but this type of door lock mechanism is not widely used anymore and i am sure that it is easily repaired as the penguin says.
but in the meantime dont use it:)
