ParticipantHi, having used this wonderful website as a guest before I’m back for more help please.
The offending item is a Hotpoint Ultima Mocroprofile 1600 spin WMA61S (again!).
This time when it gets to the spin cycle on any programme it will make a couple of spins then stops and makes a screeching noise. It sounds like something is siezing up. I have checked out the pump, that seems to be ok and it is pumping water out but I did notice when investigating the pump that inside the back of the machine there appears to have been a leak from the middle of the back of the drum as there is staining from a brownish colour liquid having run down. (Like rust) Is it likely to be my bearings ??
Also for a while now it hasn’t been pumping in any fabric softener, I’ve managed to live with this but thought I might as well mention it while I’m at it.
Does this sound expensive ? I have tried a service engineer request in the repair section but there isn’t anyone in my area.

The rust is definately the main bearings, at the very least you will need new bearings, more likely a rear drum half, possibly a drum support as well.
If your machine is under five years old Hotpoint will do this for labour only. Not really a DIY job.Re the fabirc softener, make sure that you clean the blue/green mesh in the drawer thoroughly, including the two little pipes at the end, you should be able to blow through them. Also make sure that your fabric conditioner is not to thick and avoid storing it anywhere that is very cold.

Unfortunately my machine is over 5 years old. So do I presume it is going to be expensive ? I’m asking myself if it is worth the cost against a new one as had to replace the lifters recently as they all fell off ! Okay it wasn’t too expensive as did it myself but things are obviously going wrong with it now.
Re the fabric softener bit I do take out the drawer quite regularly and clean it all out and also clean inside where the drawer goes as am aware it does get a bit sticky and gooey. So all it has had for the last few months is water going through that section. Any other possible solutions ?

The bearing repair is quite expensive, if it is causing the motor to stall then it would suggest that it is beyond bearings alone. That would require drum support and drum rear half plus seal. Difficult to cost out without seeing the machine but you would need to budget for between £110 & £150 minimum. The fabric conditioner is the least of your problems. I would advise that you get it seen to ASAP if you intend to keep the machine, you may damage the motor as well if you keep on using it.
If we have no one on Repairs@ in your area then PM Dave Conway or one of the other mods, they sometimes have details of reputable engineers that are not listed on the forum.

Must admit not too worried about the fabric conditioner bit as like said have managed without it. Am not using the machine at present as wasn’t happy when I realised there was something wrong. Just remembered it made a clonking sound just before it got to the spin cycle and then ‘jammed’ when it started to spin. Probably means not much more but hey as much info as possible always helps.
But any suggestions for a reputable engineer in my area (Portsmouth) would be very gratefully received as yellow pages is obviously full of them and don’t know where to start as am not back at work until Monday to ask if anyone there can recommend someone!December 1, 2005 at 11:46 pm #156422iadom

Thanks for the number for Link.
Have given them a ring can come to Portsmouth but I am into a £72.50 call out and labour charge before any parts so if talking about £100 – £150 for repair might as well think about a new machine. Am trying a local chap I have been given a contact for who comes recommended to see what his charge might be.But thank you for your thoughts / help anyway at least I have an idea of what might be wrong and an estimate for repair figure so I am not going in blind so to speak.
