So I moved into a new flat a few weeks ago. Being a “pierce film several times” sort of chef I have only just got round to using the cooker. I heated up a few things in the oven at the weekend, and the second time even I turned on the hob to *gasp* also do some veg. Yesterday I did the same thing, and a few minutes later I wondered why it wasn’t heating the water in the saucepan. Then I realised I had no electricity anywhere. The main fuse thingy had turned itself off. So I switched off everything electrical and turned it back on. All fine, until I switched the cooker back on (at the wall – the oven and hob were still turned on on the cooker itself) and then everything blew again.

What I want to know is whether I need a new cooker or whether this is something I can work around (like, maybe it just doesn’t like me using the oven *and* the rings…). A new cooker isn’t a priority for me with all the other things that I need to buy, and frankly if I can find a workaround that means I can use some parts of it but not others I’ll be fine with that indefinitely. But I have no clue about these things and I don’t want to do anything dangerous. Is it OK for me to switch it all back on and try various combinations of things and see whether I can make it work? Or should I be leaving it well alone? Obviously I don’t want to burn the house down or electrocute myself.

    Any advice much appreciated!

from what you described you are blowing the RCD which detect earth faults

normally on a cooker it is one of the elements that are faulty

Thanks for answering, Dave! I don’t understand the workings of a cooker. When you say “one of the elements” does that mean that the problem might be being triggered only by, say, turning on one particular ring? So it would be worth experimenting to see if I can still use the other three rings, and if I can still use the oven?
