ParticipantPlease help I have a Hotpoint Aquarius WMS38 model which was working perfectly fine one day and the next day it won’t start the wash program. The machine fills with water and then stops. The wash light is illuminated but nothing happens. It will pump out water if you stop the cycle by pressing the ‘!’ program, but the drum will not start or spin in this action. Have taken the back off the machine and checked the drive belt, which is intact. Any suggestions gratefully received. 8)

Check the heater, by the sounds of it that may be your issue.

Thankx for the replies.
If it was the Brushes or the Heater, would the machine given some indication in any way that it was going to fail. By looking at the Brushes in the motor can i tell if there warn out, should they be a certain length. If it is the Heater how do i check it is still working and where is it located. On this same machine with help from yourselves i have replaced the Bearings on the spider on the Rear.
Any help to keep this baby going would be Great,
Thankx again ValleyboyApril 15, 2018 at 8:46 am #455377iadom

Doubt very much that the heater is faulty, the motor would still run perfectly even if heater was at fault.
The only indication you may have had is the machine sounding a little โdryโ or a slight crackling noise.
Sometimes all the lights will flash but not always. You have to remove the motor and examine both the brushes and the commutator that the brushes rub against. The ends of both brushes should be shiny, not rough or pitted and the commutator should also be smooth and a little shiny. There is a good article in the Help and Advice section on this site to advise on brush faults. ๐

Hi Iadom,
Thankx for your reply.
Have looked at the brushes etc, they seem o.kish but how long should they be, these brushes are just of the end of the brass carriage that holds them in place.
How do you test them in place when looking at them, to see if they are o,k. Sorry for all the questions i like to get it right before i order any parts.
Thankx V.B 8)April 15, 2018 at 6:06 pm #455379iadom

Given the model and age of your machine, if the brushes have never been changed then they are long overdue even with only moderate use. I can’t see them so no idea of their condition.
Three different motors used on these, all with different brushes.April 16, 2018 at 6:56 am #455380Martin

Thatโs a sure sign they are worn out and therefore replacing them will solve your problem.
