ParticipantHi, we are thinking about replacing our 20year old ceramic hob with an induction hob. As the old one has an aperture of 640mm wide we are going to have to go with a wider one. I would welcome advice about which would be the best choice – Neff, Bosch or Smeg. Bosch and Neff seem to do 800mm wide models and Smeg’s webiste lists 770mm wide ones but other websites list Smeg models which are 700mm wide. I am not going to change the hood above the hob as this would entail totally deconstructing the kitchen – I plan to centre the new hob in the existing space. Any views or advice greatfully received.

Just make sure you don’t have a built-under oven underneath….i’ve certainly had problems with Smeg hobs in that situation, so it would be worth checking with the other manufacturers too if that’s the case. (induction hobs have a ventilation system on the underside which needs fresh room air)

KeymasterThey all suffer from that Clive, not just Smeg.
No space, no ventilation = dead hob.

I would go for the Neff range although the same group as Bosch Neff are better value and made to a slightly higher spec. just a case as to whether you prefer stainless steel frame or frameless and touch control or removable point ant twist magnetic control knob. They have a two year guarantee too. Details here http://www.neff.co.uk/hobs.html

Thanks for the feedback. WE have just drawers underneath – I am hoping that if we make sure that the back of the units has free access to the stone walls of the house (ie underneath the worktop where the hob will be fitted) and that we maybe put a vent into the plinth of the units then this will ensure enough air circulation. Can you advise on best option for getting the hob fitted – I was going to contact a local electrical contractors who are quite a reputable company for their quote – I was hoping that they would also tackle making the aperture for the hob bigger.

Hi
Either the electrical contractors you mention or a kitchen fitter / installer. Whichever you choose, just make them aware that the aperture needs to be enlarged so they know to bring a jig saw with them.
