    Hi,

This dishwasher is built in – integrated, original problem was blocked drain hose under sink, sorted that.

Client poured caustic soda down the d/w – me thinks he killed the drain pump as it was stiff – so I ordered new pump.

Before I start replacing the pump, it looks like a simple screw off and screw on – can anyone confirm this? Can this be done from the front under the metal cover or do I need to remove the side panel to access it?

I am worried that the caustic soda may have damaged the circulation motor so just to put my mind at ease, can caustic soda damage dishwasher?

Easy job to replace from front, remove metal plate and transfer pipe from sump to water inlet then just twist pump off. I have also had customers use caustic soda/mr muscle drain cleaner but never had to replace motor seals because of it.

Yeah I’ve had this problem recently where some prat did just that. Poured in caustic soda and then left it as it didn’t cure the problem. The caustic soda turned solid and was a bu$$er to shift and had to break pump impellor anyway to release pump.

Trouble was I didn’t realise that it was caustic soda and didn’t wear gloves and my hands burned, blistered and skin flaked off over several days. Nasty business, so do please wear nitrile gloves when attempting to get at the pump won’t you? 😉

I found out it was caustic soda as I noticed the smell of the liquid. I even had the stuff in my eye a short while ago which resulted a visit to the local A&E, thankfully no lasting damage.

Some customer can be very discreet on what they put in, they mumbled something like a small bottle of white granules that you add water to it. My gut feeling that it was caustic soda, damn right it is!

I used the gloves but they tear so easily, I will have to think about heavy duty marigolds the black one of course.

I should not think I will have trouble removing the drain pump as it was diluted, I will add warm water to soften it then sponge the liquid out then remove the pump. Hopefully it should come off with ease.

In hindsight, the drain hose was blocked at the sink so he could have avoided using the caustic soda in the first place instead he deprived his family of luxury.

Bless him, I don’t hold it against him.

Sponge? Haven’t you got a genuine Bosch syringe (340007) in your toolbox? 😕

No i haven’t! I didn’t know there’s such thing as syringe. I once mooted the idea of wet n dry hoover but can’t be bothered with all that fuss.

The part number you gave me is that for which supplier?

checked all my suppliers – they all says no longer available. Until there’s one available, I will continue using the sponge!

I’ve Googled up one for you twicknix HERE 😀

Stick a short length of air pressure hose on the nozzle and they’re brilliant for draining off any water in sumps, flooded bases, flushing clean air pressure chambers etc etc…… 8)

I’d like to know of a sponge that is as adapted to as many uses. An essential piece of kit that I couldn’t manage without.

Turned out on the second visit, this dishwasher did not require new pump. The warm water I poured in on the other day have loosen up the caustic soda and I diluted it few times (sponge it out then add more warm water and repeat the process). I checked for any leaks, it all appears to be watertight so it looks like the client got away with it.

So naturally the client is relieved. I did warn him about using caustic soda, he learnt his lesson as he burnt his hand using the stuff. He’s a Doctor for goodness sake! He works at a local hospital.
