This fault has suddenly arisen on an 8 year old NEFF integrated dishwasher S5543X2GB/42. As soon as it is plugged in, it trips the mains RCD (with door open). I have taken off the front bottom inspection panel and there is no obvious water leak. Any idea as to the likely cause (obviously an electrical component leaking live to earth but which are the likely culprits?). What’s the best way to isolate the fault?
Then if it comes to replacing parts, I’ve taken apart other white goods but never this type of dishwasher. Access looks very limited – do you have to separate the tub from the base to do anything (eg replace the pump)on these machines?

If it trips as soon as it is plugged in and before it is switched on then it could be the mains suppressor that has failed, usually located behind a prise out panel at the rear where the mains cable enters the machine.

Sorry, I wasn’t clear about this. It IS switched on. Switching it on last night tripped the power immediately. What I mean is that it trips immediately power is connected, rather than at some particular point in the wash cycle.

When the ‘power is connected’ is when it is plugged in or switched on at the wall socket or isolation switch, with the machine itself switched off.If the mains suppressor was at fault it would trip at this point, before it was switched on via the controls on the door.
If it is plugged in and only trips when it is switched on via the dishwasher controls then there are lots of possibilities.

That’s what Andrew said Jim, so without any more word tripping your diagnosis is spot on. The mains filter is at fault here though how Andrew proceeds I will leave him to decide………. 😉

Sorry to disagree with you Martin but Andrew said ‘ it IS switched on” this did NOT make clear if he meant the dishwasher was switched on or if he meant the power was switched on. 😛

Whatever! But Andrew did say in the 2nd sentence of his opening post “as soon as it is plugged in”. So it transpires that you and I came to the same diagnosis ATEOTD anyway:wink:

I’m still not being clear, sorry.
When it is plugged in and switched on at the mains, it is fine. It is not the suppressor which is the problem.
When it was switched on to commence a cycle, it tripped.
Mysteriously though, after showing this fault repeatedly all through yesterday whilst I poked around trying to look inside for any sign of the cause (I hasten to add, disconnect power, poke, reconnect power, test, disconnect power, poke etc etc).
Strangely enough, this morning the problem has gone away, I’ve just run a complete rinse cycle and am about to try a hotwash cycle.

I’m still interested to know how any kind of repair can be done on these things – it’s almost impossible to see in there, things are so closely packed. Do you have to take the tub off to do any most repairs?

Sadly most of the base components, motor, heater box do require a complete strip down including removal of the inner tub or hinging the base away. The drain pump and one or two other bits and bobs can be replaced without having to remove the base.
Have you done a visible check of the wiring harness inside the door, look where it passes through into the base, can often break there.
It should be possible to do an insulation check on the drain pump, circulation pump and heater with the sides removed, and the mains plug of course.

Cheers, I’ll follow that up. “insulation check” – what, you mean a visible inspection? Since fault has for the moment at least gone away, can’t do anything with a meter.

If it goes off again then unplug, remove the outer door panel and carefully examine the door wiring harness, especially down at the bottom where it bends.

Hi,
I have a similar problem with my Neff Diswasher s5443x2gb/42It trips RSCS when the door is closed to start a programme (even the cold rinse)

Though it’s worth summarising that errors of this nature hold no clear cut answer. You have to unplug from power, remove panels and find the source. Using a meter to locate electrical faults is a vital tool. It’s an elderly machine so the main pump and heater are primary areas to look.
