NEFF dishwasher white residue problem

hi, any ideas or pointers appreciated.

my dishwasher has just started to leave a uniform white powdery residue on everything.

ive done all the usual checks and everything ‘seems’ to be fine.

i’m pretty sure the residue is salt and so i’m assuming the softener has malfunctioned in some way. although i accept that it *could* be hard water deposits (although it seems too powdery and uniform for that). either way, i’m assuming the water softening process has failed in some way.
