ParticipantNEFF Double oven Model U16E74N0GB/06
FD 8910 000118
Installed from new March 2011 No problems till now.Last week whist the oven was being cleaned the bottom oven cavity light blew, (literally the glass dome of the lamp shattered) this resulted in the RCB tripping in my consumer unit. A new known working lamp was fitted, the power was restored and the oven time clock was reset. I noticed that the lamp was not working. On further investigation several symptoms were identified. Please see list below.
1. Main (lower) oven light not working
2. 2 halogen lamps that normally light when the oven door is closed not working.
3. Both main and top ovens when set to cook now overheat and burn any food in oven in a short time frame. When this happened with the main oven it was so hot when the door was opened it triggered my kitchen heat alarm)
4. The cooling fan runs all the time and never turns off even when both ovens are not turned on and the oven cavities are stone cold. (the cooling fan comes on as soon as electricity is restored to the appliance)
The cavity light in the top oven lights OK. The circulating fans are working in both ovens.. Currently the appliance is disconnected via its own dedicated MCB.I have a few ideas as to what might be wrong but am using pure guess work. So am seeking advice, can it be saved or am I looking at an expensive replacement ?

Was the oven steam cleaned by any chance?

No, done by an appointed third party that we have used many times before. Only elbow grease and a dip tank for the shelves.

Oven lamps blowing up in this way often take out the electronic control unit/s. Judging from the symptoms it is likely to be the case here but the trick is finding out which of the 3 electronic circuit boards is affected?

What, if anything can be done to narrow down which PCB it is? If indeed it is a faulty board.

It’s now a matter of isolating the power, lifting the oven out, lid off and physically inspecting the control boards. Also the lamp unit will have to be replaced as well. Contacting a local repair company or Neff another option to consider.

I would like to avoid calling on NEFF if at all possible as my bank balance is still smarting from our last encounter over a microwave. I have considered looking for physical damage ( burnt out solder track, resister, diode etc) to try to identify any faulty parts, can you give me any pointers that would help me locate the 3 boards you mentioned. Or would it become apparent when I take the back and/or top of ? I am assuming that once the appliance is out of its housing it will be fairly simple to locate and replace the lamp holder.
What about things like thermometers and or overheat cut outs etc or are they integral to the PCB’s ?

Hi
Sadly the answer to all your questions cannot be answered on here because we don’t know ourselves. However a few answers can be found here on the Neff site for explosions and lists. These are what we have to work with as independent engineers. Neff own engineers are the only ones to have full service access.
Calling Neff out will cost £95 odd pound plus parts and VAT which may be a cheaper option in the long run as diagnosing this complex fault may just cost you a bomb.

Thanks Don & Martin. When I get home tonight I will whip it out of the housing and have a quick look before deciding how to progress this.
Much appreciate all your help. I will post later and let you know what I have decided to do and when I get it sorted either DIY or an engineer call out I will post the resolution.

Well it’s taken a while but I’m back to let you know about the resolution to my NEFF oven issues. I wasn’t able to identify the damaged parts, so I called in some assistance. I had the oven inspected by two independent “no fix no fee” repair companies and the oven was deemed to be beyond economical repair. So I scrapped it and bought another oven. So problem solved but not the way I would have preferred. Sorry if this does not provide solace to anyone looking for a solution to a similar problem. Thanks to all who tried to assist.

The problem with those no fix no fee bods are they aren’t going to attempt a repair that no one is going to pay for.
End result, easy option, write off the appliance.November 6, 2017 at 4:25 pm #451149Martin

……because they had no clue as to what was wrong with it. Easy get out for them not to get involved. You would still have it and be using it had you called out Neff in the first place.

Another option would have been to call Neff and take advantage of their extended warranty payment of about £180 they would have repaired your oven and given a one year guarantee as well.
