    Hi all

My seven-year-old integrated Neff dishwasher is not finishing properly. I have the original manufacturer’s instruction manual but can find no model number on it, unless this is it: 9000 050 262 (8410-1)

Looking on the machine, I cannot see any identifying label.

THE PROBLEM: Many of the dishes are left quite greasy, though otherwise clean. Up-ended vessels such as cups, glasses and bowls are left with a pool of dirty water on their top-facing ends. In the past this would all have dried away cleanly.

Heating element/thermostat? – Because of the grease we thought maybe the water was not heating, but I interrupted a cycle last night and found the water was hot.

Drying Fan? – I read that many machines use a drying fan, I’m not aware whether or not mine does.

The machine is currently out of salt, which would contribute to the poor cleaning, but would not explain the change in drying patterns.

All other parts appear to be clean and in good working order.

    Any advice?

    Thanks

    Springchicken.

Fill up with salt. Remove and clean thoroughly the spray arms and fine mesh drain filter. Then try it again a couple of times before reporting back. An no it doesn’t have a dryer fan and the model ( Enr ) number is etched in the stainless door panel adjacent the door latch recess. 🙂

Yes it is! Found it (the model number – S5453X1GB/55). Thanks.

Arms and filter cleaned already, but will fill with salt and report back.

    Thanks for help so far.

    Okay, post-salt update.

Problem remains, though the plates in the bottom tray are definitely cleaner on the face. Upper tray is much worse than the lower tray – spattered with greasy wetness and pools of dirty water collected in the hollows of upended dishes and cups.
It really looks like the wash cycle is not finishing – and I’ve tried a variety of wash programmes. If it was an iPhone I’d do a hard restore to reset the software, but don’t know what the issue might be here. Photos of dirty dishes available, if helpful.

I suspect the fault may be that one of the two spray arms are not rotating. That the diverter valve that switches the spray arms on and off in turn is broken? So, whilst it’s running note the position of each spray arm, shut the door and let it swoosh for a second or three then open the door. If my diagnosis is correct then only one spray arm has moved in that time. 🙁

    Hi Martin
This appears to be the problem. Upper arm does not appear to be moving on repeated checks. It is dripping water, but I presume that’s spray from below, it’s not pumping out of the arm as is the case in the bottom, spinning, arm.
Is this likely then to be the diverter valve? Where do I find that?
    Many thanks

The diverter valve is incorporated into the heater unit or in Neff speak : Instantaneous Water Heater. That usually involves a major strip- down of the appliance to replace. Costly too! 🙁 If you can locate the model number ( E nr no) of your machine ( begins S????) then I can give you the part number and price of the heater.

    Hi Martin

    ErN is S5453X1GB/55

The bottom tray contents are washing better than the top but not perfectly. Is this consistent with this fault, or should the bottom tray not wash perfectly?

    Thanks

Clearly the diverter is jammed partially between top and bottom spray arm positions. A new heater unit ( Part no: 483257) costs £100.64 plus fitting charges if you call out an independent repairer to sort it. So you’re looking at a cost of around £175 – £195 to get it fixed. That’s the bad news and if you’re up for it at least you have the heads up ahead of calling someone in. It’s a very very common fault by the way. 🙁

Re: NEFF ending wet and greasy

    Hi Martin
Thanks for the info, as a result of which I decided to call in an engineer BEFORE ordering the spare part (I recently made the mistake of replacing a laptop screen only to discover that the problem was something else … I didn’t want to make the same error).
GOOD NEWS! He found that the water supply problem was in fact caused by a badly blocked pipe under the machine, with foodstuff from the machine. He cleared it out and the machine is working well again now – the diverter was not the problem in fact, but the symptoms were the same.
    Thanks for your help.
